Today a Palestinian boy drowned
in the still-much-too-cold-to-swim-in
waters of Lake Ontario, on a whim,
out with a friend for a swim.
The boy sharing news of his passing on
the masjid mic after isha said he died a
shaheed; the water his vessel for shahadah.
Today, somewhere else, I'm sure,
a Palestinian boy drowned as well,
not in water but in his own blood.
What is written for you,
simply won't pass you by.
You will swim to it,
or it will fall unto you.
If you are written a shaheed,
then you will die a shaheed,
either by water or blood.
Some are buried under rubble,
some are lost to cold currents.
This boy's body was found.
His name was Mohammed Qasim.
