“Strength Derived”
If strength is derived from anything,
it's the tiny fingers and tiny toes,
the little face that smiles at me
even when I am in my emotions.
It's the thought,
the reminder,
that I can't do to you
what was done to me.
I will never leave you behind.
This burning flame
that I shield from the winds
of time,
and times
when the days turn to night,
and your sleeping face
is my only company in the dark.
