Lost Childhood 23
Once again he placed his hand on the small of her back moving her forward so that she was slightly in front of him. They walked in silence until they reached the restaurant door. He told her to let him get that, referring to the door and allowed her to enter the restaurant first. He greeted the hostess and requested a table for two; they then followed her to the rear of the dining room. Once they sat down he asked Sara if she wanted anything to drink. Stated that she would like a rum and Coke if he didn’t mind; he looked at the hostess and ask for two rum and Cokes.

As she went to order the drinks, he asked her how was school going. She told him she was finished and was starting her internship in September. “WOW!”, he said, “You’re a go getter!” She laughed and asked, “Is there was anything wrong with that?” Alex waved his hands in defense, “No, no, no I think it’s great; it’s a good quality to have.”, he replied. She smiled at him and he smiled back. Their drinks arrived and the waiter asked them if they needed a few more minutes or were they ready to order. Alex looked at Sara and she told the waiter she needed a few more minutes, stating that she had never been there before and asked his recommendations.

He raddled off a few specials that the restaurant had at the time as well as the house specialties. She thanked him and asked for a few more minutes to decide. Before he left Alex ordered an appetizer, Pan de Yuca, he was hungry. When the waiter left Sara said, “This was very thoughtful of you; you’ll have to recommend what’s good here.” She loved Colombian food but didn’t want to be disappointed. He recommended two or three dishes he had tried on previous visits; two of them the waiter had recommended also.

When she had made up her mind, Alex waived for the waiter that they were ready. Alex ordered for the both of them; he told the waiter that they would start with a bowl of Ajiaco with two spoons. He told the waiter to bring Sara the
Pescado frito y arroz con coco, that he would have the Bandeja paisa and two waters. As they waited for their food to be prepared they shared the soap and talked.

Alex talked about his sister and why he became a police officer. Afterwards he asked Sara why did she want to be a nurse. She just said that she enjoyed helping people and thought that she could do that best by practicing nursing. Before they knew it the waiter was bringing them their food. Alex rubbed his hands together with excitement; he couldn’t wait to eat. They were both quiet from that point forward.
