Etymology of the name.
At the base, it is a continuation of the noble and then Latin personal name Hortensia, feminine of Hortensius which probably derives from hortus ("vegetable garden", "garden"), with the meaning of "cultivator of vegetable gardens/gardens", "relative to the garden" (similar to that of the names Giorgio, Agricola and Ortolano).

Starting from the seventeenth century, the feminine form of the name received new impetus thanks to the figure of the Roman orator Ortensia, and then again in the early nineteenth century due to the fame of Ortensia of Beauharnais, adopted daughter of Napoleon and queen consort of Holland.

A partire dal Seicento, la forma femminile del nome ricevette nuovo slancio grazie alla figura dell'oratrice romana Ortensia, e poi ancora nel primo Ottocento per la fama di Ortensia di Beauharnais, figlia adottiva di Napoleone e regina consorte d'Olanda.
