Promises to my inner child
I promise to be patient and let you take your time
Holding your hand as we take these steps together
I shall be slow to get angry
And quick to give grace
Cuz darling, we all make mistakes
And even if you slip every hour of every day
I promise to remind you each time, it’s okay

I promise to tell you you’re beautiful
On days when you dissect your reflection
Because darling you were taught
These normal features are imperfections
You were taught to be insecure
But we can unravel that together
And braid a confidence sturdy and better

I promise to be gentle with our body
To priortize nourishment over how we appear
And I’m here to tell you
That this body will continue to change
And with that change, comes some gain
And that’s never a reason to ever feel shame
Remember, my child
Our bloated belly is a human belly
Hold it and know we are full
And we are whole
It has to expand to make room
For all that is good and all that is true

I promise beloved, to celebrate our hair
In all it’s natural beauty
For these curls are strong
These curls are healthy
We cut off the damaged
We cut off the dead
Now new life grows from our head
For we are kinky, coily and free
And there’s no other way I’d rather be

I promise to praise you
Upflift you, embrace you
Because when I hurt me
I hurt you
The child inside
Tired of fighting to be alive
Unlike our false family, I’ll never leave your side
Because I’m your first family
Your forever ride or die
You carried us through the earliest
Toughest years of our life
You did what you could
You did your best
Close your eyes, because now you can rest
I carry you in my arms
And put you to bed

I promise, I got you
I got us
