Filtered Sun
The morning sky reminded me of the books I had read about Auschwitz,
There was a haziness to the sky keeping the Sun from shining its brightest.
I remember a description of the smoke being so thick it blocked sunlight,
How could surrounding communities be unconcerned with events?
There must have been a stench of burning flesh in the air,
Was fear stronger than empathy for the life of our fellow humans?
Maybe the thought of them being less than human made a difference,
A severing if the definition of humanity is sometimes all it takes.
