Who Are You
Write a short story where the protagonist has a doppelganger. #doppelganger

Jane’s story happened two years ago. In a dark forest, she was trapped. The only thing that lights the forest was the lightning. There was unstoppable beating of rain. She was all wet. She hid herself in a big tree, unsure to survive the cold. She prayed for rescue, but no one seems to hear her plead.

The next morning, Jane is awaked by direct sunlight. She smirks as she gets up. “So I’m still alive?” ask herself. She wanders her sight as she feels a little hungry. She only had a bottle almost empty to fill her stomach. She starts walking to find food. She smiles in delight when she hears a sound of a river. She follows the sound, and as she sees it, she run to fill her bottle. She washes her face and starts to look around. On the other side of the river, she sees banana trees. One of them has ripe fruits. She crosses the river and get some for food.

Finishing her food, she looks at her still wet, and dirty clothes. She looks around, no one is there. She takes off her clothes and washes them. She puts them on the big rocks beside the river to dry. Waiting for it to dry, she swims the river. Enjoying the fresh feeling of cold water. After some time, “Mae?” She was startled by the deep voice. She looks up the big rock on her right, and sees a masculine guy her age. Her eyes widen. “Hey, don’t look at me – you pervert!” exclaims her loudly. The guy quickly turns around. “I – I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to” apologizes the guy. She swims to get out of the water. “Don’t turn yet!” demands her as she walks to her clothes. They were not too thick and dries quickly so she puts them on. “All done!” she informs. The guy turns to her. “What are you doing here, dimwit?” asks the guy casually. She rises her brows in surprise of how the guy talks to her. “Oh, I went on paragliding just I ended up here.” The guy pinches his brows together. “I think you’re hiding from Mike again. Let’s go, I will take you home.”

The guy pulls her wrest and walks. Even when she’s all puzzled, she follows the stranger. “Wait, why did you call me Mae?” The guy lets go of her hand and stops walking. “Then should I continue calling you dimwit?” She glares at him. “Whatever!” The guy chuckles and shakes his head. “Let’s go, you’re being weird. That creeps me out” utters the guy, and continues to walk. “It’s you whose weird” she murmurs. “What did you say?” asks the guy. “Oh, nothing.” She runs to keep up his pace. “If you don’t like him. You can just tell him I’m actually your boyfriend. I’m sure he’ll stop bothering you by then. No need to hide from him from time to time.” Upon hearing the phrase, her eyes widen. “How did you know that I hide from him? I mean – do you know me?” The guy twists to look at her, pinching his brows. She stops walking, and stares at him. The guy walks to her. Both are staring at each other obviously puzzled. The guy hits her forehead. “We grow up together, how can I not know you?” Her jaw drops. She doesn’t know what the guy is talking about. “Jake, help me – Mike’s here again.” The two look at the girl who runs to them.

The three of them seems to be washed with cold water. They freeze on their feet. They look at each other - silent, for some time. “Who are you?” They ask in chorus. Jake takes his steps backward away from Jane. He’s now standing near Mae. “Who are you? You’re not an evil spirit are you?” asks Jake. “No, I’m not. I’m Jane. I told you I just had an accident while paragliding.” She rolls her eyes. Then she looks at the girl next to Jake. “Wait, who are you? You look…...” She looks at her from head to toe. “Exactly like me” she wonders.
And that was how Jane met her doppelganger.
