The Power of a Single Word
#WritcoStoryPrompt123
It was a beautiful summer evening, and the sun was setting behind the mountains. Mary and Tom were sitting on a bench in the park, enjoying the serene view.

Suddenly, Tom's phone rang, and he excused himself to take the call. When he returned, he looked visibly upset. Mary asked him what was wrong, but he just shrugged and didn't say anything.

Mary sensed that something was bothering him, but she didn't want to push him to talk about it. They continued to sit in silence, but the atmosphere had changed. The peace that they had been enjoying moments before had been replaced with tension.

After a few minutes, Tom spoke up. "You know what, Mary? I think we need to talk about something."

"Sure, what is it?" Mary asked, trying to keep her voice calm.

Tom took a deep breath and said, "I heard you talking to your friend on the phone earlier, and you used a word that I don't like."

Mary was confused. "What word are you talking about?"

Tom hesitated for a moment before saying, "The word 'stupid.'"

Mary was taken aback. She couldn't believe that such a small thing could cause a fight between them.

Tom continued, "You know that word bothers me. It's disrespectful and hurtful. I don't want to hear it from you."

Mary felt guilty for using the word. She knew that it was one of Tom's pet peeves, but she had used it without thinking.

"I'm sorry, Tom. I didn't mean to upset you. I'll be more careful with my words from now on," Mary said sincerely.

Tom smiled at her and said, "Thank you. I appreciate it."

They hugged each other, and the tension dissipated. The power of a single word had almost brought their peaceful evening to an end, but their willingness to communicate and forgive had saved it.

From that day on, Mary made a conscious effort to be more mindful of her words. She realized that sometimes a single word could have more power than she ever imagined, and she didn't want to hurt the people she loved.
