My name is August, and I've been ignored all my life. My family doesn't pay a speck of attention to me, everytime I try to make contact with them, they either move away from me or just sit there and pretend like I don't exist. Even on my birthdays, they don't listen to me.

A few years ago on my 11th birthday, they only gave me a cupcake and a book for school, they didn't even invite any of my relatives. That's how I knew they didn't care about me at all. Now here I am, with my 13th birthday coming up, but I'm sure my family didn't care.

The first thing I did after I ate lunch was told my family I was going out, they just sat there and said carelessly "Go ahead, just be home by 4:00.", so I went out. I figured that I could just skip my curfew since I knew that my family didn't care about me, it was 6:55 at night and I didn't even care to go home. I just cared about finding a place to sleep.

I ended up at an empty mansion, the lights were all turned off and it looked all dusty, I opened the door with my hair clip and went inside to see a spotless lounge with three couches, a lamp by each one, luxury paintings on the walls, and on the top was a giant, shiny chandelier covered in diamonds. I didn't want to intrude, but I also wanted to take a little more time to look around.

Minding my own business, looking around the house, I stumble into the kitchen, it was so clean. Not a dish was in the sink, and the kitchen also had a chandelier, covered in glitter AND diamond sapphires. I went over to the cupboards and looked inside, they were stuffed with food, great food. I WAS getting a little hungry, so I grabbed a bag of Funyuns and a pack of mini Reese's.

I was also really thirsty, so I decided to check inside the refrigerator, it was also stuffed with food, and some apple juice. I grabbed a bottle of apple juice and sat down at the table, I ate my food and it was absolutely delicious. After my snack, I've been getting sleepy, but I couldn't just go back home, my parents probably wouldn't even be there.

So as I kept wandering around the house, looking for a place to sleep in, I spotted a bed inside a beautiful white and gold room. I went inside and felt the bed, it was Egyptian Cotton, so soft. I decided that I could just sleep here until morning, after all, this is just a rich, abandoned mansion. ...Or so I thought.

I drifted of to sleep in seconds after eating my snack, then when I was half awake, I heard voices...

"Honey."

"Yes, dear?"

"Why is there a girl in our bed?"

"I'm not sure."

"Should we call her parents?"

"Shh! Mommy! You'll wake her."

"Sorry, sweetie."

I blinked my eyes open, staring at the family in front of me with scared eyes, "Excuse me, miss, but who are you?" the lady asked me, I slowly got out of the bed, "M-My name is August. I'm sorry for introducing your house, I just needed somewhere to sleep!" I explained, the lady's husband put his hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, it's alright, we're not assuming you broke into our home, we're just wondering who you were. Nothing else more important. However, are you hungry?" he asked, my stomach grumbled before I could say no, so I just nodded.

A week had passed since I've been seeing the happy family, the one thing I wanted to know was their names, the only person that gave me her name was the little girl, her name was Bonnie. She was always so sweet to me, my birthday came fast, but I never told them.

Finally, my birthday arrived, I still haven't told them, because I didn't want to be a burden. I pushed myself out of bed and ran to their house to say hi, when I knocked on the door, nobody answered, I knocked again, still no answer. Their door was unlocked, I went in and the lights abruptly turned on, "SURPRISE!" I heard everybody scream.

I jumped up and squeaked softly, "Oh, you must've thought I was somebody else. Who's party is this for?" I asked, the man giggled and walked towards me, "You, August. We found out it's your birthday, we had a chat with your parents. I mean, it was your birthday soon, and they were talking like `so what´." he said. I felt ashamed for that. "There's no need to be ashamed, darling. If they don't want to celebrate your birthday, we will."

He touched my heart when he said that, a few hours later, it was a big birthday bash! The lady let me drink tequila, Bonnie dyed some of my hair blonde, and the man put on some awesome movies. I fell asleep a few minutes later. I woke up and saw that it was morning, I quickly jumped up and ran towards the door, but was stopped when I heard the woman's voice.

"I wouldn't waste time trying to get home, August."

I looked at her in confusion, "Why do you say that?" I asked, she came closer to me and held my shoulders tight. "We sued your parents. We found out how they've been treating you, so we sued them.", I couldn't stand it. My parents were the last thing I wanted them to find out about.

The woman smiled and gave me a hug, "It's alright, sweetie. But I also have great news. Me and my husband took custody of you, so we're now your legal guardians. We'll take care of you like our own.", I smiled at that. Long story short, we signed the adoption papers, and my biological parents lost everything they had, I no longer have to worry about being ignored.
