On call: living in the underworld (ch. 4)
' Rukky ', she heard her name not once, not twice. She turned and saw her parents with a boy who was at least four years older than her. He had a striking resemblance to her dad. She was about to run to them when she saw they were standing over a pot of oil.
Then a man wearing a black hood came out of nowhere. He looked like death itself. Rukky tried to look at his face but she couldn't catch a glimpse.
He made as if to grab her but she dodged and started running. 'Run, Rukky. As far as you can', she heard her mom say. Then she heard a voice, she was sure it was from the man with a black hood. He said, 'we are coming for you. No matter how far you run, we WILL find you.'
Rukky woke up in cold sweat. She was breathing so fast. Her heart was beating so hard she thought it might burst.
She sat on her bed for sometime. After she had become a bit calm, she began to ponder on the dream. Were her parents still alive? Did she have an older brother? And if so why did she not know?
Her mother had taught her that dreams had meanings. 'Every single dream has a meaning', she had said, 'either literal or metaphorical.' Rukky thought and thought hard.
Suddenly, she remembered the man in the black hood and a chill ran through her spin. Her head hurt so bad. The last time she had felt so much fear and pain was when her parents died. Now that she had hope that her parents were still alive, why did she have to feel the same pain over again?
She looked out of the window and unto the Streets. For a moment, she thought she saw the man in the black hood but it was only for five seconds and he disappeared.
That night, she finally managed to go back to bed but. In the morning she was still shocked and frightened. 'Maybe it's just a nightmare and has no meaning', she tried to console herself.
But the dream kept coming and in worse forms. In one of the dreams, she watched her parents and supposed brother were forced to eat live scorpions.
She tried and tried to convince herself that it wasn't real but with the increasing intensity of the dreams, she had to face reality. They weren't just dreams. She had to find out what they meant and fast. 'But how?' she kept asking herself. She did find out, but not in a way she would have ever expected.
