The missing safe
The case of the missing safe was the only thing about which the whole village of Poppypardon talked. Every villager was worried that if the richest man's house which was the most secure place in the village, wasn't safe, were their houses safe? Where was the burglary going to happen next?



It had happened on the 23rd of Feb, when Mrs. Amelia Acker, went to her closet room to take out her most expensive diamond necklace from her safe. That's when she found out that the safe was missing.



The safe contained Mr. Acker's money and jewels as well as Mrs. Acker's expensive gems and jewels which her father had gifted her.



She rushed to the village constable and reported to him about her missing safe. He searched for the missing safe in the whole town but he couldn't find it anywhere. It was ordered by him that the Acker mansion was not to be entered until the whole place was searched up by forensics.



Mr. Harris Acker, a businessman, who had gone to the city for a business deal had just arrived the night before the incident happened.



The main suspect was the maid. The maid as usual had entered through the backdoor early morning through the spare key. After making breakfast she told Mrs. Amelia that she would be leaving for the week, to go to her mother's who lived in another village.



After the maid left the milkman arrived. After inquiring in the neighborhood, it was found out that the milkman was seen going to the back of the house everyday for twenty days, only to come back after an hour or so.



Half the village stood outside the police station where the milkman was being questioned.



"Did you or did you not steal the safe?!", shouted the constable at him.

"I did not, sir. It wasn't me, I swear." The seventeen-year-old replied almost crying.

"Then why were you going to the back of the house?! Did you find a way to open the back door?!"

"No sir."

"Then tell us the reason boy!" The constable slammed his hands on the table.



The boy looked towards Mrs. Amelia nervously before speaking.

"A stray dog had died before giving birth to her four puppies. One morning i head little noises and went to check to find out four pups who were trying to drink milk from their dead mother's breasts. I knew Mrs. Amelia won't approve of this that I was bringing up puppies in the back of her house. I thought she would fire me... So I decided to feed them every day and night."



The constable looked taken aback. He was sure that the boy stole the safe and was sorry that he made such quick decisions. He stuttered, "So if i go there and check right now will i find those puppies?"

"Yes sir." The boy replied.



The constable took his assistant and the milkman along with him to the back of the Acker mansion. He looked around but there was nothing but dry grass there.



"Wait- no, please. They were here... I've been framed or something-" The boy started as the assistant started handcuffing him. The boy started crying.



They started going back when they heard it. Tiny little barks. They turned around to see three pups taking small steps towards the milkman happily falling and then getting back up. The boy was uncuffed and he hugged and kissed them.



Now that the milkman was removed from the list of suspects, the only person remained towards whom all the clues were pointing was the maid. She had to be the stealer. Because her anonymous flight to her mother's was unexpected. She always used to give a prior notice if she was going to take a leave, but now she just took off on her own.



After some digging, it was found out that her mother lived in the village Floppypardon. The constable, his assistant and Mrs. Acker took off to the village. Mrs. Acker was sure that this was a waste of time and the thief was in their village. She trusted the maid so much.



When they arrived at maid's mother's house, they found that she was extremely sick and had sent a letter to her daughter to come stay with her since it might be her last days.



They searched up her whole house and found nothing there.



"I told you that we were wasting our time." Mrs. Amelia said on her way back.



"It seems like you were right ma'am but we had to mark out all possible suspects before the forensic report arrived." The assistant said looking at her.



The forensic report arrived on the 28th of Feb. The Ackers were sitting in the garden of the small pub in which they were staying when the constable burst through the door and said out loud, " Mr. Harris Acker, you're under arrest of stealing the property of your wife. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you." Two policemen handcuffed him and started taking him to the police car. Mr. Harris tried to speak something but it couldn't be heard under all the gasping and talking of the crowd that had appeared. The car drove away.



Mrs. Amelia fell on her feet and started crying. The assistant policeman came and sat down beside her.

"Now, now it's okay." He tried to console her. "Your husband's fingerprints were all over the backdoor and the place where the safe was kept. Their conclusion is that the night he returned, he took the safe out and was too drunk to realise that he would leave his fingerprints all over the place. Then our question was, why did he steal if he was so rich himself? The answer was that his business was going down day by day and whenever he went to the city, he gambled to try and get some money, but he failed there too. No choice was left except to steal the jewels and blame it on the milkman."



Mrs. Amelia stopped sobbing and looked at the assistant policeman with tear-filled eyes. "Oh..."



"But you know what my conclusion is?" He said after a pause. "In the forensic report, there were also a set of fingerprints all over your husband's clothes which didn't belong to you or him. Apparently, in his city tours, he was seeing another woman and cheating on you."



Mrs. Amelia gasped.



"So, my conclusion is that you wanted to take revenge because he cheated on you and when he was drunk you pressed his fingers against all necessary places in the house so that the blame would go on him and he would get jailed.



About the safe. You kept buried it under the little puppy space so that no one would ever think of the possibility that it was there. No wonder the pups weren't there when we tried to find them. Mrs. Amelia Acker, you're under arrest for stealing your husband's property. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you."



Mrs. Amelia said nothing.
