The Messenger

Faith is something to be believed as superstition, a practice mostly by the religious. But this is wrong. By the way, my name is Theo which means God given. Oh how I love my name because my mom raised me as one. I am currently working as a postman, delivering letters to friends and acquaintances. I am simply a messenger, sensing vibrations before I go from one world to the next. With this, reality to me is something I define as to whichever I lay my focus on. There is a lot more to uncover in this universe.

How did I start in my job? Well, it was one of those dreams I had just before waking up. As I were opening my eyes, I was shocked to see that my surroundings bear no solidity. The scene in my dream is what I am seeing in my waking hour only that it is dissolving right in front of me. It was transforming back to my bedroom. My heart was pounding looking at this sturdy tree that is solidly real, yet slowly fading. I didn’t know what was happening. But I was glad to come back to a place of familiarity.

“Are you done playing this role of a nervous wreck?”

I looked around, confused, and searching for the voice.

“What you have just witnessed-“, he continued on, “is your ability to traverse from one dimension to the next.”

“What?”

“There aren’t many of us who can do that.”

“Who are you?” I asked. I still couldn’t find him.

“I’m here.” He softly whispered in my ear.

Suddenly his face appeared right in front of me. “Boo.”, he teased.

He reached both of my shoulders and we were instantly transported back to my dream. I recognized the strong sturdy tree next to us. I couldn’t believe it that I had to touch it. I felt the roughness of its bark. I could even smell it. There were a lot of questions swimming in my mind.

“It’s real.” He muttered unamused.

I saw him for the first time, but not the entirety of his face. He was wearing a long brown trench coat topped with a black fedora hat.

“And welcome to your first job, Theo. Here-.” as he handed me a sealed envelope. “Look for Mr. Kobayashi. He is a professor here. He is expecting you.”

I took the envelope from his hand and examined it. It was addressed to Hanzu Kobayashi. There was even a postcard at the upper left side. I checked from whom, it says sender’s name was Jenny Kobayashi.

“What the hell am I supposed to do with this?” I asked.

“Deliver the message.” He said firmly as he slowly walked away from me.

“That’s it?” I called out to him. “No job orientation?”

There was no answer. Then he disappeared.

That was when I realized I was still in my sleeping clothes. I was at a university that I do not know of, how was I even going to get myself dressed?

Believe you have it. I heard his voice in my head.

“What? I need decent clothes.”

“Yeah dude, you do. Lucky for you I am an organizer from a charity and I have some with me. I am Bradley, come with me-“

“Theo.” I answered back. I didn’t realize I was thinking out loud. He must have heard me.

Bradley was so kind to provide me a change of clothes. He even pointed me to Mr. Kobayashi’s room, finding him was such a breeze.

I found Mr. Kobayashi drunk in his classroom. He reeked of alcohol. I checked the time, it was still early 7 in the morning.

“Mr. Kobayahsi.” I called out to him. He barely moved.

He must be. I thought to myself. But this is my first job. I heard him chuckle in my head.

"Mr. Kobayashi", I called out and moved closer to him. I took out the envelope from my pocket. I was shocked when it disintegrated in thin air.

"Mr. Kobayashi?" There was still no response. I reached for his shoulders and tried to wake him, but he was kind of stiff and unmoving. My heart pounded. He might be dead. I grabbed his wrist and checked his pulse. There was none. Both the letter and he are gone.

"Hold it right there!" someone shouted at the door. "What did you do to him?" It was the university guard.

"I arrived here and he was already dead!"

"You are not from here, aren't you?"

Oh what a relief, I thought that someone knew. "No, I'm glad-"

"This is the first time I've seen you in the uni."

"Oh." How do I get out of here? I asked myself.

Just head out the door and run. It was the voice in my head.

Great. I answered back at him. I started heading for the door.

Now, imagine that you are back in your room. He calmly instructed.

But-. I tried to protest.

“Just hold it right there! Don’t do anything stupid.” warned the guard. He was now pointing his stun gun at me.

I smiled sweetly at him while inching towards the door.

Feel your bed, now!

I felt its soft mattress and the fragrance of a newly changed bed linen. My head on the pillow, and it was pure heaven.

---
I breathed deeply and closed my eyes. When I opened it, I was back in my bedroom. Was it all a dream? It seemed so real.

“Every bit of it.” It was the man in a long trench coat with a fedora hat was standing next to my bed.

Automatically, I lifted myself up. “You! What happened? He was dead! How did I?” I had so many questions. He was just staring at me with a smug look on his face.

“Death got to you first.”

“What?”

“He transcended.”

“What?”

“His frequency is no longer a match to this universe. He is heading to another one which is a match to his.”

“What about the letter?” I asked.

“He still have some parts of him in parallel worlds. If you hurry, you can catch his essence.”

“The letter?”

“Always in your pocket.”

“What’s the significance of this if he is leaving?”

“You still want to catch him?” He was getting impatient, I sensed it in his voice.

“Well- yes.”

“Okay, close your eyes, always have faith and believe.”

I closed my eyes and listened to his voice.

“Go back to the scene of seeing Mr. Kobayashi. Remember what other things your senses reminded you of him.”

In my mind, I was seeing him and smelling alcohol. I slowly opened my eyes and was amazed. My room was dissolving, disintegrating and restructuring to Mr. Kobayashi’s classroom.

“You’re doing great, Theo.” He said and he was gradually disappearing from the scene. Of course, he wasn’t there. I recalled the guard with the stun gun. And he was standing right in front of me. My body jolted and ached from the stun gun. I uncontrollably dropped to the ground paralyzed.

I was hearing laughter in my head and blacked out.

I awoke from the cold water splashed at my face. I am back in my room.

“Wake up!” it was the guard.

That startled me, I abruptly sat myself up.

Back to your room, Theo. It was him again and my head was heavy.

“What is your name?”

“Theo.” I answered him.

Stop wasting time. He told me once more. I was getting used to it, having conversations in my head with him.

Quickly, I imagined myself back in my room. Like magic, I instantly was.

----
“You are getting the hang of this.” said the man in fedora hat.

I was holding my head. It was starting to ache.

“Trust me, it’ll be easier. Cultivate faith and believe strongly while imagining.”

“What the hell is your name?” I demanded.

“Eric. There aren’t so many of us. Those who know our services are highly illumined people.”

“But Kobayashi’s a drunk.”

“Ahh- never judge. Hurry up before all of him transcends.”

“Copy that. I’ll make sure he is alive. And I’mma leave out the guard from the scene.”

“You are learning, Theo.”

“You could have just told me that. It’d be easier.”

“Experience is a far better teacher, don’t you agree? Go on now.” He urged.

---
I closed my eyes and arranged a scene of Mr. Kobayashi arriving at his classroom. My room started to dissolve as the new one appears, first in blueprint, then having the tangible reality of a 3D world. I felt the cold knob of his classroom door and opened it for him.

Mr. Kobayashi entered smiling at me with an unopened bottle of wine in his hand.

“I’m celebrating.” The Japanese professor told me. “Come in.”

“Mr. Kobayashi, I am not from here.”

“I know. You look a bit old to be my student.”

“I mean-“

“Theo, it’s okay. I am expecting you. Hand me my letter.”

“You know?”

“Of course, I do. I’ve been here for so long.
There is nothing for me to learn here anymore. I must move on.”

I gave him the letter. He smiled so sweet when he saw the sender’s name, Jenny Kobayashi.
He opened the letter, and a silhouette slowly emerged. It was a beautiful middle aged woman wearing the same ring as Mr. Kobayashi.

“Hello my love.” She said in almost a whisper.
“You are so beautiful my Jenny. I have our favorite wine to share.”

Jenny leaned closer to him and gave him a kiss. Their lips lingered on each other.

“I missed you, so much.” Said Mr. Kobayashi.

“And I love you, too, my dear Hanzu.”

They both looked at each other, gratified that they are both finally in each other’s arms.

“How long has it been?” it was Mr. Kobayashi.

“A thousand years, I’m glad the messenger got to you.” Jenny threw me a glance and winked at me.

“I always have faith that we’ll be united. That is why I’m so patient, my dearest. I just know.” They are still both embracing each other, cannot let go.

“You just know?” Jenny teased him.

“Yes, I felt it, the very first time I looked at you. When we were both just energies, electricity, awareness with no form. Faith gave me a vision of us in unison.”

The most spectacular thing happened right before my eyes. In their embrace, their souls merged together. It was as if a new soul is being formed in front of me, more powerful, vibrant, majestic, and splendid. They both turned into silhouettes of the night sky. Their stars and galaxies within were also integrating, unifying as one. In them were comets and shooting stars racing. It was a beautiful union.

“I’m not leaving without you, you know that.” It was Mr. Kobayashi teasing his wife.

“We are one now, together we go to our next sojourn as one.”

This new Being faced me. “Thank you.” They said in one voice.

They disappeared as all around me became the night sky.

---

“Congratulations on your first mission, Theo.” said Eric and we were back in my room. “You are now officially- a messenger.”

The end.
