CHECKLIST FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHER'S SUPERVISION

Teachers do what you inspect not what you expect.

For effective supervision you need to inspect the following, before and during the teaching process.

1. TOPIC RELEVANCE

▪️Is the topic in the scheme of work for the term?
▪️Is it chosen in sequence as arranged in the scheme of work ?

2. LESSON NOTE

▪️Are the instructional objectives well stated?
▪️Are the resource materials used in developing lesson note correctly stated?
▪️Does it contain the 5 steps of presentation/procedures?
▪️Does it make provisions for classwork if required? e.g.Maths
▪️Does it make provision for board summary and Home work? among others.
▪️Is the lesson note corrected and endorsed by the designated officer before use?
▪️Are the corrections and observations made effected before use?

3. GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPIC TO TEACH

▪️How thorough and rich is the content of the topic to teach in the lesson note?
▪️Is the content well explained to the learners?▪️How updated( current) is the teacher on the topic content?

4. THE TEACHING PROCESS

▪️How is the topic introduced.
▪️Are relevant teaching aids and instructional materials effectively used?
▪️Are correct teaching methods and styles used?
▪️Are learners actively involved in the teaching/ learning process?
▪️Is there any relationship between the instructional objectives and evaluation questions?
▪️Does the lesson end with summary of the topic content?
▪️Are the instructional objectives achieved within the stipulated time frame?

5. EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION

▪️Is the teacher well dressed professionally?
▪️Is the teacher emotionally stable?
▪️Is there decorum and orderliness in the class?
▪️Is the time efficiently used?
▪️Is the sitting arrangement appropriate?
▪️Are the class furniture and other facilities well arranged?

6.COMMUNICATION SKILLS

▪️Does he has a good command of acceptable language of communication to teach in the class? (English or the mother tongue.)
▪️Does he has a legible handwriting to write on the board?

7. TEACHING SKILLS

How efficient is he in the use of:

▪️Reinforcement and rewards to motivate learners?
▪️Questions to ascertain learners' understanding of topic content?
▪️Illustrations to aid learners' understanding of topic content?
▪️Set induction to arouse learners' interest ?
▪️Demonstration to explain topic content?
▪️Involvement to carry every learner along?

With these you are good to start a new term.
