The Crown
I stood upon a mountain top in the middle of an orange-pink sunset falling down on the village. Playful sunrays tickled my face all over, as if they wanted to wipe away all the tears that I cried.
There were less than fourteen hours left. After that, life as I knew it was coming to an end. I was eighteen years old, and going to turn into a wife the very next day at the break of dawn.
Our people were hungry, I understood that well. I just didn't know why it had to be me who had to pay for their food. I wasn't the leader's daughter. I've been spending my whole existence picking up herbs and flowers for others to sell them at the market. I've been running down the hills and walking through the waters of rivers and lakes. I knew how to imitate bird tweeting before I even learned how to speak.
I wasn't made for a place. I had no proper education on the royal ways. Compared to the king's people, I was a savage. Nothing more, and nothing less. Yet, for some unthinkable reason, he decided he wanted me, and he didn't want the leader's daughter. Even though she was the most beautiful one among us, she was smart, and knew etiquette, he still preferred me - a simple peasant who couldn't even hold a fork properly.
I couldn't decide whether I should be honored, terrified or mourning.
I knew from that point on, I would have to leave all I ever knew behind, to move into a palace. But, there would be no starvation for my people or for me. We would finally be safe. But...
- Maya!
My aunt's screams echoed through the valley. I had to run down.

...could I trust him?
I walked down the alley, wearing a gown made of flowers, and, for the first time, a crown. It felt strange. Nobody walked me down, as I didn't have a father or a brother, or an uncle. But, every set of eyes was locked on me. Apart from mine.
I found his gaze. Full of lights, flickers and glimmers. Like gems. And at that moment, I knew, whatever was to come, they were entirely mine.
The eyes I could look into, whenever I needed their advise. The eyes of my betrothed. And suddenly I realized, I wasn't alone anymore. All these eyes needed was my "yes".
