THE HOMELESS ONES
N. Heddings

I met a giraffe
A pink puppy and a
Reindeer
On my way to work
At 5:30 am
This Sunday morning.

All 3 were sitting in the same seat
At my bus stop.
Some childs discarded toys,
Some homeless stuffed animals
With an empty bag of
Chips Ahoy
Sitting next to them.

It’s still dark
At 5:30 am,
The moon still in the sky,
It was cold and
They looked a little frightened.
A little left behind and
Lonely.

So i flipped em a few bucks,
And a couple a cigs
As my bus was rollin up.
I told em to stay up.
That they were gonna be okay.
And i stared at em
Thru the window
As i was rollin away.

Sitting there on the bench
All by themselves.
Just some stuffed animals
I know,
But i was sittin on that bus
In my seat
All by myself and it
Made me sad.
Made me feel kinda lonely
On a cold Sunday morning
Riding to work
Down at the docks.

It’s hard to describe
That type of lonely...
There’s a sorrow involved,
A passion that’s out of place.
Physically small yet
Emotionally huge and powerful.

Why do i have to find
So much meaning
In such meaningless
Circumstances?

My only solace came
When i realized that,
Well,
They still had each other,
At least for a little while.
