Railway Rain
when the raindrops gemmed
like pearls upon the earth
the leaves shuddered softly
and pressed into the dirt
their bewitching flash of green
ribboned sage and bracken plum
that smothered like ripping lace
embroidered on a mountain thumb

so the wind began its frail dance
across a steel night
the fronds that grasped at useless ground
were scattered in aimless flight
had morning been placed anon
and graced the fragrant grass
a light of red might rise like flame
above the soundless pass

then as the train approached
with cargoes from distant lands
the girlish boughs of aspen stood
to salute the silver grand
for the flashes of silence grew
beyond the reveries’ reach
and the white sound of foam
blew faintly across the ingot beach.
