Any Other Way
Poem for Good Friday
Any Other Way
R
The worst thing I have done to you
Is try to live your life for you
The problem isn't you
it's me
and my impossibilities
I know you're hurt by what I say
I don't know any other way
I speak of you and criticize
you say I have the kindest
eyes
I treat you like you're never right
You say you dream about me every night
What I've done to you
is not ok
I don't know any other way
There are feelings that can't change
There are childhoods that feel strange
There are times when I can't cry
But I cannot tell you why
I once knew why
but I forget
I'm left with
what I haven't forgotten yet.
There are times when I can't cry
But I cannot tell you why.
See,
I saw it in a dream
and I think I know
what it means
All we had done to
break the law
was all undone
by what I saw
He spoke of what was very hard to accept
He took one last look at us and then
He wept.
I saw what had been done to him
where the trash is tossed outside of
Jerusalem.
I think I cried the most I have ever cried
When I heard the last words he spoke before he died,
" Forgive them, Father"
I heard him say,
"They don't know
any other way."
