The Skeptic
Prove it.
Show me.
I don't believe you
or in anything;
even science is perfectly fallible.

Logic:
the objective calculation
of costs and benefits,
of actions and consequences,
all weights on a giant scale
with thousands of pans,
innumerable variables of varying importance
in a state of constant flux.
Perfect balance is impossible.

There's no such thing as a perfect decision,
one where everything goes right
and costs everyone nothing.
There will always be somebody
getting a shorter end of a stick.

You can't will anything into existence
or make things happen by wanting them enough.
You pray, you wish, you hope.
Hope being the only logical choice
as it's just a statement of preference.
You hope your day goes well.
You hope you get that big promotion.
You hope mom pulls through.

Sending a prayer or declaring a wish
supposes that a power in the universe
might reach out and make things go your way
if it thinks you deserve as much.
You hope that such a power listens and cares.

Your own will, your mind, and your body:
These are your only tools with which to
interact with the world around you.
Your will gets you out of bed;
it pushes you to make your life your own.
Your mind gathers data and calculates;
it aids you in understanding your options.
Your body physically exists;
it allows you to reach out and attempt to grasp
what you've set your sights on.

Ultimately, you're left sitting in the middle
of a densely-packed field of dominoes
all lined up in twisting, interlaced patterns
that trail off into the horizon.

You have to choose a direction you'd prefer to go in
or you'll stay right where you are.
You have to study the patterns to attempt to make
an informed decision that's favorable to you.
You have to sit up, reach for that first domino
and tip it over.

Then you can stand up and watch
as the chain reaction rattles around you
hoping the wind doesn't pick up.
