i have a thousand unpaid debts

to the people i had to outgrow

and when nightfall breaks,

i can't forget what i owe.

when i made the fateful choice

to love you like i had

i sacrificed myself

to hold your feelings in my hands.

but when the morning comes

and i remember why you're gone

i think of all the things you did

and why i'm so withdrawn--

i spent so long, put in all the work

to help you through this life,

but when i turned around just once,

guilt cut through me like a knife.

for i'm just one small person,

i can't fix you or help you heal

and if my efforts have failed thus far,

i can't help how bad you feel

so you see, i had to let you go

to protect my peace of mind

now it's the people i had to outgrow

that haunt me in the night.
