She untied her shoelaces
Felt the solid earth beneath her heels
Far from the paved roads that led her to this place
She found herself hidden beneath a canopy of green
Like a deer, she leaped beside the trickling stream
Amber waves of curls bounced as she ran away
From the only world she had ever known,
White gown tossed by the wind caught her at the shin with every stride
Gaze straight ahead, she fled
Was something chasing her? No.
Nothing was chasing her, but a past she longed to forget
Birds began to take flight as they jolted wide-eyed to her sudden passing by
Branches swayed with the weight of their furry inhabitants trying to keep up with the young girl
Where was she running to? I don't even think she knew yet, but it surely would be a place much more peaceful than the last.
It would be a place where she could finally be free.
Cool air in her lungs made her feel alive, perhaps, alive for the very first time.
Only one thing she knew for sure
She was never to look back again.
