THE STILL-MAN
"Half of me is fear
half of me is pain
half of me is loneliness
half of me is insecurity"
—— @RaquelCosta , My Halve

I.
Fear

Strange is the night;
black was the night;
the rain patters dismally against the pane
of my window in the moonlight;

Fear, alas! Fear!
When, then, wash'd away with fear,
I saw the horrid dreaming night-terrors again——
on one older night of the year.

II.
Pain

The pain had never left;
Oh, the pain had never left;
that I was all fill'd with disdain——
with lost hope, sweet oblivion, or bereft;

Dead to me—
Oh, dead to me—
I realized that I wou'd fain
drown myself in the sea.

III.
Loneliness

I am alone;
I am alone;
alive, I hate to remain!
But soon I'll find myself under a tombstone;

My life is undone;
my life is undone;
I am spiteful, introvert'd, profain:—:
I've play'd the game of Life, but the Devil has won!

IV.
Insecurity

I am afraid of the dead;
I am afraid of the dead;
I fear that all the men believe I'm insane!
Die, thou, my tears are unshed;

Year of my strife;
day of my strife;
what of my soul shall remain
after the end of my dreadful life?
