The Lesson Continue.. Part 3
Over a period of a few weeks Dans mother was bed ridden and could hardly speak, the doctor had visited on a numerous occasions and finally said " there's no more I can do for her son"! On a cold freezing November morning Dan's Mother passed away, he now realised he was all alone in the world and no one cared.
Dan spent all day running up and down the cobbled streets in his worn out trainers, every puddle he stepped in soaked his socks, the cold rain water washed over his unwashed feet his toes frozen with numbness.
The day of the funeral arrived, Dan was dressed in a pair of black flannels, white school shirt, tie and a school blazer. The mantle clock ticked slowly towards 10:00am the house sounded empty just like Dan's life, the silence was interrupted by the chimming clock and there as promised was a knock at the door, at that moment in time Dan knew his life was about to change, but for better or worse only time would tell.
In the church Dan stood silently gazing at the cheaply made coffin that contained his mother, he walked over to it and placed a single red rose that he had picked from the vicars garden on top of the lid, he muttered "I love you mum" and walked away.
As he reached the door of the church a cold breeze brushed his cheek and sent a shiver down his spine, it just felt like a peck that his mother used to give him, when she showed him any affection. A tear formed in the corner of his eye and a lump rose in his throat, Dan wondered had that been the spirit of his dearly departed mother.
During the next couple of days Dan struggled to cope without his mother, he never ate or washed he just sat and gazed at his mothers ashes that stood beside a photograph of his brother on the mantle piece, upon the table was a letter stating he must vacate the house within three days.
Dan ran upstairs filled his school bag with his belongings which wasn't much, he picked up a photograph of his mother and brother, he ran back down stairs and out of the front door, he took one last look at the house then posted the keys through the letter box and walked away.
The Following morning Dan woke early pushed the cardboard that had been covering him onto the floor, he stood up and yawned a droplet of rain landed on his head not rain again he thought to himself, he quickly buttoned up his blazer turned up his collar and headed out the alley where he had slept.
