The Handsome Stranger Chapter 2
August 11, 2020
Five minutes after midnight and twenty minutes after Patrol Officer Dean Sanders radioed into the dispatcher, he saw a black sedan pull onto the street. Monroe Violent Crimes Detective Hector Garcia stopped his unmarked Crown Victoria behind Officer Sanders’ cruiser. He noticed a few people standing on each of their lawns still dressed in their night clothes. He assumed they were the neighbors attempting to rubberneck his victim and crime scene. Detective Garcia and his partner, Detective Ryan Hamelin, climbed out of the black sedan.
“Talk to those rubberneckers. See if they saw anything and send them back inside,” Detective Garcia instructed his partner. He stood at five feet eleven inches and he weighed one hundred eighty pounds. The thirty-seven-year-old detective had short black hair and dark brown eyes. He wore black denim pants, a white short sleeve cotton shirt with blue running shoes and a dark blue MPD windbreaker.
“Sure thing,” Detective Hamelin pulled out a notepad and pen. He stood at six feet and he weighed two hundred one pounds. The thirty-year-old detective had red hair and blue eyes. He wore light blue denim jeans, a red polo shirt black boots and a dark blue MPD windbreaker.
Detective Garcia headed in Officer Sanders’ direction, who stood beside the ambulance talking to another patrol officer. The other patrol officer and his partner arrived a coupled minutes Officer Sanders arrived on the scene. The Violent Crimes detective noticed the EMTs pulling a gurney out the front door and he pointed at them while he spoke to Officer Sanders.
“Why the fuck are they removing the victim from the crime scene before the ME gets a look at the scene?” Detective Garcia asked the patrol officer.
“Because she is still alive,” one of the EMTs replied.
“What?” Detective Garcia changed his direction to walk towards the EMTs.
“She has shallow breathing and a thready heartbeat,” one of the EMTs answered.
“Is she conscious?” Detective Garcia asked them.
“No.”
“OH MY GOD! MY ANGEL!” Emily Williams yelled as she ran up the EMTs.
“We need to get her to hospital,” the EMT said to the detective.
“Yes, of course. I will stop by the hospital later to talk with the victim’s mom,” Detective Garcia said as the EMTs loaded the gurney into the ambulance along with Emily.
“I will let her know,” the EMT closed the ambulance back doors.
Detective Garcia pulled out a pair of latex gloves and cotton booties from the pocket of his windbreaker. He slipped them on as his partner walked up to him. Detective Hamelin did the same as his partner and they stepped inside the house through the front door. Detective Garcia examined the front door while his partner examined the foyer and living room.
“No signs of a forced entry. The assailant might’ve exited out this way,” Detective Garcia suggested. “Did any of the neighbors see or hear anything?”
“Not a thing. You think entry was gained through the back door?” Detective Hamelin exited the living room and entered the kitchen. “Maybe through this sliding glass door?” He motioned to the sliding glass door which emptied out onto a concrete patio.
“Possibly. Or she knew her attacker. Mark the door to be dusted by the techs when they get here. Officer Sanders?” Detective Garcia called for the patrol officer standing by the front door.
“Yes, detective?” Officer Sanders stepped into the doorway of the kitchen.
“Check to see if any of the houses across the street have a surveillance camera that might’ve recorded anything over here,” Detective Garcia instructed the patrol officer.
“Yes, sir,” Officer Sanders said.
“What are you thinking happened here?” Detective Hamelin inquired of his partner.
“I’m not sure yet. I don’t see any signs of a struggle in here or in the living room. However, the back door is open,” Detective Garcia stepped onto the back patio.
Detective Garcia saw the victim’s cell phone on a patio table. He took a picture of it with his cell phone. He motioned to his partner to hand him a plastic evidence bag and he slid the phone into it. He sealed it and handed it to Detective Hamelin. He walked through the backyard to the chain link fence. He examined a couple of the bushes and took pictures of bushes with broken branches. He saw the victim’s Kindle on the ground. He took a couple of pictures of the Kindle Fire. He picked it up and noticed the cracked screen upon examining it. He also saw blood in the cracks on the screen. He slid the tablet into a plastic evidence bag and sealed it.
“You think the assailant jumped the fence and attacked her here?” Detective Hamelin asked him.
“Yeah. She was attacked back here,” Detective Garcia turned on a small flashlight and looked at the ground in the immediate area around them. “He attacked her and took her inside,” he walked back towards the patio.
“Why take her...
