Dan's Life Lessons part 4.. No place for a child.
Dan's stomach rumbled so loud that it sounded like thunder, he knew he had to get something to eat, so much so that he started to look in bins and skips for anything that looked edable.

He found an half eaten sandwich, dusted off the dirt and nibbled it, the bread smelty musty and tasted mouldy but Dan thought needs must he needed to keep the hunger pains away.

Dan walked through the back streets dodging the puddles and dark corners and headed for the market square, where he thought someone might take pity on him. Dan sat on the cold step next to the old water fountain and started begging, he felt ashamed, lonely and scared.

Peoples just walked past him, with their noses in the air laughing , sometimes he would receive a cruel word or two or an occasional kick.
Suddenly an old gentleman dropped a couple of coins near his feet and said "Go and get something to eat, you look like you need it!" "Thank you sir" replied Dan.

Dan picked up the coins and walked towards the old style shop on the corner of the square, "Ye Old Town Store" the sign read above the door. Dan was just about to enter the shop when the lady behind the counter shouted "Oh No You Don't, we don't have the likes of you in this shop"! Dan didn't know what she ment by that remark, people like you ... it had confused him some what.
" I've got money " he replied politely, " I don't care it your the Queen of Sheba, you're still not coming in" replied the lady forcefully who was now busy serving on old frail lady.

Dan turned away from the shop and headed back towards the old fountain, he hadn't got far when a tall spotty youth shouted him, " Hey kid, do you want to earn some money"? " Yes please" Dan said "What do I have to do"? the youth replied in a stern voice " All you have to do is keep a lookout for anyone coming this way, and if you see anyone just whistle ok"? Dan was slightly confused yet again, but still agreed.

Dan watched the youth break open a window and start to climb inside the shop, at that moment in time Dan knew what he was doing was wrong, so he took a deep breath and at the top of his voice shouted "STOP THIEF " a burley man heard this and came running over to where Dan stood.
"What is it kid"? the man asked Dan, Dan explained what the youth had done and said to him, the man stayed with Dan until the police had been and gone, the police had told Dan he was very lucky not to be arrested, this had shaken Dan and he knew from that moment on , he had to get off the streets one way or another!
