MONKEYPOX- A POTENTIAL DANGER
An emerging outbreak Monkeypox
an emerging zoonotic infectious disease caused by viruses and is transmitted to humans by infected humans and animals like monkeys and rodents.
MONKEYPOX IS A CONTAGIOUS VIRAL ZOONOTIC DISEASE.
PRIMARILY VIRUS IS TRANSMITTED FROM SMALL RODENTS,
GAMBIAN POUCHED RAT, AFRICAN DORMOUSE, ROPE
SQUIRREL, MONKEYS, TO HUMAN BEINGS.
THERE CAN BE SECONDARY TRANSMISSION FROM HUMAN TO
HUMAN.
IT CALLED MONKEY POX AS IT WAS FIRST DISCOVERED IN 1958
WHEN TWO OUTBREAKS OF POX-LIKE DISEASE OCCURRED IN
COLONIES OF MONKEYS KEPT FOR RESEARCH
it can be transmitted to other humans by close contact. Its clinical studies have shown that it is very similar to smallpox but less severe. smallpox was removed from all around the world in 1980,
monkeypox is still present in central and west africa as an endemic near tropical rainforests. In this a person may get infected through respiratory droplets, from contaminated materials, in a health centre etc.
Rash is of various types-
MACULE PAPULE VESICLE PUSTULE CRUST
Currently monkeypox is spread in almost 34 countries around the world.
what can be the reason for its outbreak in other regions- the most logical reason looks to be due to importation through infected animals and travellers
according to researchers young childrens are at more risk of getting infected from monkeypox
SYMPTOMS-
1 bodyache
2 rashes
3 high fever
4 swollen lymph node
COMPLICATIONS
EYE INFECTION AND LOSS OF VISION
PERMANENT POCK MARKS
DISCOLOURATION OF SKIN
SECONDARY BACTERIAL INFECTION
ABSCESS AND AIRWAYS OBSTRUCTION
PNEUMONIA
SEPSIS
MISCARRIAGE
DEATH
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
Contact with infected person
Respiratory droplets
Lesions
Body fluids
Contaminated material and surfaces
Virus can enter through-
Respiratory tract
Mucous membrane of eye and mouth
Broken skin
ANIMAL BITE
CONFIRMATION OF MONKEYPOX
PCR TEST IS USED FOR CONFIRMATION
DURING FEBRILE STAGE-TONSILLAR & NASOPHARYNGEAL SWABS PCR
DURING RASH STAGE-LESION (LESION ROOF AND FLUID OR LESION CRUSTS) SAMPLES' PCR
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE
FEVER
RASH
SWOLLEN LYMPH GLANDS
SORES IN MOUTH AND THROAT
EYE IRRITATION OR REDNESS
TREATMENT IS SUPPORTIVE AND SYMPTOMATIC,
SPECIFIC ANTIVIRAL TREATMENT STUDIES ARE IN ADVANCED STAGES, NUTRITIONAL CARE, AVOID DEHYDRATION, PREVENT SECONDARY BACTERIAL OR FUNGAL INFECTION
