I'm Sorry Mayo.
I was in my third year, studying medicine at the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, and Mayowa, fondly called Mayo had just concluded her Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) Exam. Mayo and I were more like siblings. Although she saw me as an elder brother, I had always thought of her as my future bride and yes I was willing to wait for as long as it would take for that to happen. I was twenty two years old at the time and she was nineteen.

Mayo was beautiful beyond words. She had a pair of slightly bulged brown eyes which made my pulse race whenever they met with mine, especially when her stares comes with a smile, revealing her pure white set of teeth and flawless dimples. Oh, and whenever she was nervous about anything, her perfectly carved little nose would twitch, this got me every time and made me squeeze her gently in my arms, until she felt safe again. Yes it has been over ten years and I still remember her like that.

Before the incident, our Families were really close. Living in a small compound with three other families. One would think either of my parents were related to either of hers, you should know what I mean. Mayowa and I were inseparable while growing up. Neighbours, friends and relatives called us "Husband and Wife" and would always tease about how we could end up together as husband and Wife. Thoughts of that alone gave me chills but then as typical young adults, we laughed about it and went our separate ways.

Unconsciously, those words kept building up in my heart. I grew to love her so much that I could do anything for her and I mean anything, whatever it would take........or so I thought. When I'm on campus, thoughts of her alone would take me back home just to spend time with her and didn't care the effect it had on my academics. I could go on and on about how great things were between us before that faithful day when the Universe and everything you could ever think of frowned at me.........TO BE CONTINUED.
