The Road to Grace Part 10
5 years later
"Maybe we should start a loyalty card program for you. Every fourth visit a month is free," cackled the officer as Shawn was let out of the doors of the jail.
Oh yeah, so hilarious.
He wanted his dad to come in his house in the middle of the night, start a fight, then blame it all on him.
Time to change the locks... again.
"Ugh," he groaned and tried to shield his eyes against the bright sunlight as he walked down the sidewalk.
Of course it didn't help he got drunk last night. He didn't even keep count on his public intoxication charges anymore.
What's one more?
He might just work on that once he got good and pissed by the time he had to walk eight miles home just to get his wallet and car.
Sadly it wasn't his first trip walking home.
If it wasn't for his limp he could probably make it in under two hours.
"Shawn?!"
He halted and turned to see a blonde standing at a metal fence separating a patio area at a restaurant.
"Is that really you?"
"Yeah...hey..."
Her peach lips parted in an intoxicating smile, something he hadn't seen in a very, very long time.
He walked back a few feet, approaching his biggest regret.
"Oh my goodness...I can't believe it?"
"What are you doing here?" He asked, looking her over from her beach waved hair down to her floral sun dress.
"I'm on spring break. I come down a few times a year to visit my parents... I still can't believe it's you! What are you doing here? You visiting too?"
"Uh, no. I live here...up the road."
"How long have you been back?"
"What? I never left."
The confused look stole her initial smile then her lips pressed together tightly for a moment before she spoke again.
"Are you busy? Do you have a few minutes to talk and...catch up?"
"Yeah sure I mean no, I'm not busy..."
"Great...come around front- join me here won't you? Are you hungry?"
"Ah... I'm not really dressed for...cafe visits."
"Oh hush if they don't like it they don't have to look! Come on," Kelsey urged.
Shawn looked down at his dusty white t-shirt, athletic pants, and sandals.
"I'll meet you at the door. Don't make me come get you."
"Okay, okay, I'm coming."
He walked around the building to the front door where Kelsey indeed...
