An Important Decision
#WritcoStoryChallenge

The setting was perfect. Candlelight, polished cutlery and a single rose set in a delicate vase at each table.

As I walked across the restaurant, I was excited about what the evening will bring me this time. The brasserie was decorated in a way that you thought you travelled back to the 80s. The walls were covered with soft pastel palette paint with generous amounts of white, in all textures and materials intensifying the soft colours. There were a few pictures hanging on the wall, mostly done by famous painters like Picasso, but you could also explore paintings from unknown artists, or from entertainers looking to join the field.

I ventured across the tables, and finally sit down next to the window that looked out to the street. The boulevard looked empty, with a few people coming and going. It was late in the evening, and New York looked impressively quiet with little to no people around.

On the table I explored the menu, that was laid down in front of me in a very sleek and tidy way. It almost looked like as it was a decoration to the setting, and the prices were quite impressive too. I did not spend too much time to choose my dinner: Lasagne with Coke, I decided.

Soon after I handed my order to the waiter, a tall black-haired man appeared next to the table and suddenly sit down in front of me without questioning if the seat is taken. He wore black jeans, and a blue jacket along with black sneakers on his feet. His face was bright red, seemingly he was rushing to get here, and his freckles were glowing in the candlelight.

“Sorry to intrude, but I had to meet you.”- he said, whilst pouring a glass of water for himself from the water jug that was prepared for me on my arrival.

“I don’t want to talk to you, we have talked enough.” – I stuttered, with a shocked face and was eager to get up and rush home.

He grabbed my hand and held me back. There were no other guests in the restaurant, only me and him in the candlelight. I did not want to admit, but I enjoyed the situation a little bit. I enjoyed that someone was looking for me and cared for me at that moment.

“Dianne, you have to understand me, I have to tell you what happened exactly.” – he said confidently, but he still held my hand for reassurance.

“Tell me then all the details Jakob, but there is nothing that you can say to win me back.” – I told him and got out of his grab. It was difficult, but still I was happy that I could show him that I am strong enough to do this. He always thought I am weak and unable to decide for myself.

“The truth is that I didn’t want to hurt your feelings, I only talked to her to end some unfinished business.” – he said boldly, eagerly waiting for my reply.

I did not want to answer him. I put on my coat and grab my bag whilst rushing towards the exit. I could not take another lie from him. As I walked through the sleek restaurant with the candlelight dancing around me, deep down I was astonished by my boldness and confirmed to myself: I made the right decision. I will never let someone lie to me ever again, I deserve better.

I glanced back at the restaurant and to the empty table with the man I once loved before, and whispered a final goodbye leaving all my memories and emotions behind.
