A Body of Water. Ch.. 2
Chapter 2,
Present day
Det. Cannon stood looking down at what used to be a very deep quarry. Not so long ago, the city of Quincy had decided to drain, and then fill the once popular, but very dangerous swimming spot.
For years, after the closing down of mining in the old granite rail, and Swindlers quarry, and after the quarry filled up with water, people would go to the quarries to swim and have a good time. Occasionally, although it was trespassing to go there at night, some teenager would wind up getting seriously hurt, and there was even an occasional death.
Then, in 1990, the first suspected murder at the quarries made headlines. At first, police weren't sure about the exact nature of the death when they discovered the body. Suspected foul play was just one of the initial possibilities, along with possible suicide, or just a very unfortunate accident.
The man they had found had alcohol in his system, and further investigation came up with no identity, nobody came to claim the mans body, and there were no missing persons reports that police could use as a starting point in the investigation. So, after a very brief investigation, the case went cold and thus, the investigation stalled.
It wasn't until the second body was discovered that things got red hot, and the first case was reopened. The second body was discovered only two weeks later, but what made things heat up, was the similarities of the first body. Another John doe, no known family, or missing persons reports. However, what went overlooked on the first body, but was a very peculiar coincidence to the second one, was the fact that neither of the victims had their teeth.
When the coroner made his first report on the initial incident, it was assumed that the victim was homeless, so having no teeth was overlooked. The first man's body had been in a very severe state of decomposition, and the water had made it quite impossible to get any finger prints as well.
The second body was pulled from the quarry right beside where the first body was found. This quarry was deeper, and the walls where much higher, so not many people swam in the other quarry because it was dangerous. Because the walls were much higher, it was difficult to see if there was anything dangerous lurking below the surface, so most people stayed away from this one.
Upon second inspection of the first body, and comparisons made between the two, the resulting reports were that these two men were not victims by chance. No, their bodies were dumped there after their murder to dispose of them.
Both bodies had been under the water for some time, yet not deep enough to keep them in the cold depths. It was also believed that there was more than one person responsible. They where somehow weighed down with something that didn't take them down all the way. Something that kept them suspended in the water deep enough to keep them out of sight, yet, close enough to the top so they could decompose properly.
What had investigators truly baffled, was the fact that there were no signs on either of the bodies that there had been anything tied to them to weigh the bodies down. Also, none of the victims had any stab wounds, no signs of asphyxiation, no signs of drowning or any other kind of foul play. The only thing the examiner was able to determine on the victims was, that they had died from apparent cardiac arrest. Yet, it was still a definite case of murders. Why else would they put so much effort into the hiding of the bodies if they weren't; right?
Now it was certain, with two bodies with obvious similarities, they were looking for perhaps more than one suspect. Although there were no obvious signs of foul play at hand, it went from a stalled case, to an open murder investigation; due to the removal of the victims teeth and the hiding of the bodies, and the identities of the victims.
The discovery of the second body, and the realization that they had been there for a while before floating up made police suspect that there may be more bodies just below the surface of the two quarries. A dive team was sent in to do a complete survey of the water below. After two and a half days of divers, and special submarines searching the waters of the two quarries, no other bodies were found.
When the rest of the summer went on without any more bodies floating to the surface, it was decided that whoever the suspects or suspect was, they had just the two victims. At least, just the two they decided to dump at the quarries.
Then, in the summer of 1992, two more bodies surfaced in the Swindlers quarry, and the investigation once again became headline news. Only now, they were dealing with a serial, or two serial killers.
This time the victims where female. Again they had reached severe decomposition, their teeth had been removed, and they were unidentifiable in the same way the first two victims had been two years before. Everything, including the cause of death, cardiac arrest.
The media gave the serial killers the nickname, the twin quarry killers. The FBI took over the investigation, and the hunt was on once again.
For the next ten years the bodies would appear every two years like clock work. Then, in the summer of the year 2000, four bodies, two men, two female, were discovered at the quarries. Each had the same M.O. as the last, matching all the previous victims since the first bodies were discovered in 1990. Then nothing.
No more victims, no bodies, no clue as to who or how the bodies had gotten there. After ten years of absolutely nothing, it was assumed that the killer, or killers, had either been locked up, or had fate catch up to them and take them to their graves.
Now, 20 years later, Det. Cannon of the Quincy police, was looking down at two bodies that floated up from below the surface of the quarry.
