A Beautiful Surprise

It was midweek, and for some strange reason, I woke up feeling sad and chilly.
As I opened the curtains, I noticed it had rained during the night.
Sunrise was long gone, but there were no signs of the Sun, and the skies were overcast.
I made myself a cup of ginger, lemon and honey tea and went and sat in my conservatory to see if the scenery in the garden would cheer me up.

The flowers didn’t disappoint as they were out in full bloom, Summer was showing off itself, and the Roses, Sunflowers and Hydrangeas were soothing to the eyes. The friendly Squirrel was on the fence fighting with his find, and a pair of Red-breasted Robins were on top of the bird feeder munching away.

It seemed that distraction didn’t work, as my mind drifted back to why I was sad.
I didn't get far with that thought as my doorbell rang, and I went to see who it was. I could hear voices and thought maybe, it was someone selling something, as I wasn’t expecting anyone today.
I hesitated while standing by the door, waiting to see if they would ring the bell again or leave.

The bell didn't ring, but a bang, bang, banging on the door started, so I opened it, and to my surprise, it was my Neice and her family from California.
Everyone was smiling, and in unison, they shouted Surprise! Surprise! Aunty.
The shouts were so loud I thought the whole street had heard them.
I was bewildered and taken aback as I never dreamt that they would be standing so close to me.

It was ages since we last saw each other, and it was pleasing to see them again.
I welcomed them in, and a friendly young man about three years old took hold of my hand as I showed them around. My mind was busy with my present situation, and those feelings of sadness seemed to have disappeared.
On reflection, it didn’t seem so important to understand why I was feeling sad anymore, and although my day started in a low mood, it ended with a sigh of bliss.

I guess not everything in life needs to be dissected and taken apart. Sometimes, some things should, be taken at face value and not go searching for reasons or asking questions about why, when or how.
