We both screamed and then screamed some more when the pounding on the carriage roof started. We clung to each other and jumped every time we heard another bang on the roof.
It wasn't until a brick came crashing through one of the carriage windows, that I then made the snap decision that we both had to leave the train.
"Come on Lois, we need off before we are crushed alive!"
So, in the pitch black, I led Lois by the hand and fumbled my way to where I hoped there would be a door handle.
After successfully locating one I opened it and with some trepidation, I jumped off the train into the inky black interior of the tunnel. I then turned to face Lois who just stood in the carriage doorway trembling. In the dark I could hear her whimpering for her mum.
"Jump Lois! I'll catch you!" Holding out my arms hoping she could see me in the gloom.
"I can't leave the train, the watchmaker won't let me!" she cried, sounding desperate.
The roof of the tunnel was caving in and the top of the carriage was being showered by bricks.
"Lois! For goodness sake JUMP!"
Then, a huge section of tunnel roof fell down and crushed the top of the carriage, smashing some of the windows. This was the incentive Lois needed to finally leap from the train.
The spell of the Watchmaker, who I now knew was also the woman Midnight, had obviously been broken with me taking the ledger from Hallowmas Hall. Lois threw her arms around my waist and held me longer than I would have liked us to be there.
