The Red Bear
Tomorrow is my little sister's birthday and I have been saving up money in order to buy something nice and special for her. I will surprise her tomorrow when she arrives home from school.
So, I'm standing in front of this odd toy shop. The entrance is decorated with skeletons around the black door which has
A rusty-gold brass door knocker.
I began to reach out for the door knocker. The vehicles and the murmur of voices behind me were making me nervous. The sounds surrounding me in the marketplace slowly faded away as my focus zeroed in on the toy shop. Holding the ring-shaped knocker, it felt cold from the slight single touch. 'Halloween came early this year, huh?' I laughed it off and knocked twice. Seeing no one was going to answer the door,I tried to open the door. To my surprise it was locked, barely budging from its spot. Released a defeated exhale, and went to look at the nearby window. It was so dim inside that I could barely make out anything I saw.
While trying to see if there was anyone inside the toy shop, I suddenly heard the door creak open.
I stepped back from the window and shifted towards the now widened door. As soon as I got to the door, I saw a person standing at the entrance.
"yes? Can I help you, dear?" she asked in a sweet and gentle voice.
"This is a toy shop, right? I'm looking for a toy."
It was an elderly woman wearing black clothes. Her hair, as white as snow, was rolled back in a bun.
"Yeah, I'm afraid the shop got shut down a month ago due to a fire break out in the premises, but if you want to look around, you can."
"Are you sure? So, you must be the owner of the shop then?
I'm so sorry for what happened to your shop. Gosh! And here I was thinking that I was going to buy a present for my younger sister." Said in frustration.
One foot stepped through the doorway, and the other followed. The interior was burnt to a crisp.
It all resembled what I felt in moment and time. A failure of a brother.
" Yes, I was the owner, but 15 years ago I started it with my husband.
It became even more special to me after he passed away three years ago. I could not let it go, let him go. I guess this was a sign to finally let go.." she said in a soft down voice
The old woman walked steadily and carefully to the light switch of the shop. It was positioned on the left side of the main door.
"I am deeply sorry for your loss." Exclaimed while I awkwardly looked around.
She turned on the switch and suddenly the shop became all bright, chasing away the shadows that were cast. The sudden emergence of the light caught me off guard since I was getting used to the darkness that surrounded me. I immediately held up my right arm to block the light and let my eyes adjust to the light intensity.
So many toys were burnt, not a single one survived or so I thought.
As if the toys were hidden by the shadows in the interior, I saw one that was different from the rest. While the others were completely destroyed, this one looked untouched. It was an obviously bright red-colored teddy bear. Its fur seemed so authentic, so bright. I was barely moving a muscle, just glancing at this bear while its black beady eyes were sparkling in the sunlight that was cast on it through the window.
"I see you got an interest in my son's teddy bear." She said. The tone of her voice blended with pride and regret.
"Yeah, what's the story behind it?" I asked.
" He was so lonely so I made him a friend to with.
He died in the fire that broke out in this toy shop. On a particular day, I left him indoors to find more materials, in order to continue producing more toys, knowing that I wouldn't be away for long.
Unfortunately, the unspeakable happened in my absence..." silence filled the
Air. Few minutes later she continued the story.
" When I found a big crowd gathered at the entrance, at first, I thought they were some new customers. But when I looked in the direction of the crowd a second time, I saw big vehicles with a long arm-like structures positioning people high up in the air, spraying my shop with water.
I rushed towards the front of the crowd.
I could smell smoke, and as I came closer, the smoke became more suffocating. I started breathing heavily, and my lungs hurt. Running to the front felt like a battle. My body began to feel hot, as if it was burning. Sweat started to fall from my forehead, down under my chin.
I collided with someone's arms, blocking me from continuing onwards. I came face to face with the giant flames emerging from the inside of the shop.
The man was wearing the fire resistant jacket and pants. "
"He gripped me tightly, I couldn't go anywhere.
My heart pounding. The only thing I could do was to cry out his name." "Kago! Kago!" ALL OVER AGAIN. My son, until my throat went completely sore." She continued
"The fire was eventually put out, but I lost my son that day. Everything was destroyed in the flames. My child was why I kept on living, but now that he's gone, there is no reason to keep living. The only thing that survived was that danm Teddy bear.
The police officers and firefighters
Said they had discovered it in the arms of the burnt lifeless body of kago."
