Realization In The Dark (1)
#WritcoStoryPrompt115

That unusually dark night, the sky was covered by slowly shifting clouds hiding the newly born crescent. The only sound in the air was the distant clicking and chirping of crickets and twigs crackling under Emma's boots.
She walked across the garden, both hands trapped in the pockets of her blue jeans. Her rough, blonde hair blew over her pale face with the light winds.
Emma was 25. A software engineer according to her degree. She had given her twelfth job interview this month. Result negative. Again.
She spent oodles of time scrolling rather than trying to improve herself and become eligible for a job or start her own work.
This week, she got fed up with all those interviews and got a job at a nearby café because she had bills to pay.
Every day at the café, disturbing thoughts erupted in her mind.
She recalled all her years at university, her degree, imagined herself as a successful software engineer, but her other thoughts would rise like a huge wave and wash all those imaginations away.
"I am still alive"
"My bills are paid"
"I have food to eat"
But tonight, she finally decided to let herself fight those waves.
Emma sat down, resting her head on the back of the bench, and closed her eyes. But it was not dark.
It was a bright, cheery afternoon, sunlight flooding the beautiful beach. Little Emma swam delightedly in its waters and didn't notice herself getting farther and farther towards the deeper side.
Suddenly, a monstrous wave engulfed her. She tried to scream, wildly slapping her hands on the water. She tried everything her little body could do to save herself. Soon, she was being rescued by lifeguards.
The scene shifted to a dimly lit street where where nineteen-year-old Emma was sweating terribly and running wildly for her life, the sound of the galloping footfalls of those two armed robbers thudding in her ears.
She opened her eyes.
She had always been trying to live and the idea of dying horrified her.
Tonight, sitting in the dark garden, Emma slowly whispered to herself, "Do I want to live only because I am afraid to die?"

To be continued...
