The birthday
Introduction
Today's my birthday. November 1st. I am turning 15. I walked down the stairs, I awoke to the smell of sizzling bacon. My mother was cooking breakfast and my little brother just barely turned 5 himself was playing with his tonka truck on the brown stained carpet. It was 8 in the morning and I had just missed my father leaving for work.
¨Hey Sammara can you please set the table¨ Of course I obliged and started to place the plates on the table.
Once I finished I walked back up the stairs to my bedroom to get dressed. I had assumed that today we were going to do something special. But when I walked downstairs my mom had asked me why I was all dressed up. And that is when I noticed she was still in her pajamas and so was my little brother. And instead of shouting at my mom I just sat down at the table and ate the almost burnt bacon and toast off of my plate. When I was done I went back up to my room. I put on my deep blue headphones and turned the music so loud that I couldn't hear my brother's tantrums. I stayed in my room for most of the day waiting to hear a knock on the door and for my mom to say that she was sorry for forgetting my birthday. But it wasn´t until the next morning that my mom realized that the day before was my birthday.
The next year
I walked down the stairs and found my little brother playing with my hairbrush. I had left it on the table this morning. My parents were in the back of the house in the kitchen arguing about how my father doesn't want me to leave. They have been going like that for the past several days or weeks I don't even remember at this point. They said they were planning on getting a divorce and how my mom is going to move to washington. And my father said a few nights ago
¨Samara it's up to you if you wanna go with your mom to washington or stay here in california with me and your brother¨.
It was Both the biggest and easiest decision I had ever made.
A year before my friend Annie had moved to washington. So I decided to go with my mother. After that conversation with my parents I called Annie and started to pack. And today is the day me and my mom leave for washington. I grabbed my hairbrush and got into the car. My father was holding my little brother's hand and waving us goodbye as we pulled out of the driveway. Of course this was a year ago. Now my mom is married to my step father and I also have a stepbrother that's around the same age as me.
2 days before my birthday
When me and my mom moved to washington we moved into a two bed two bath house. The kitchen was smaller than the one we had in California but for me and my mom it did fine. Since we moved here during the fall months I had to start a new school year with new people. The only person I would know at the school is my Neighbor Annie. It did not take long for me to make new friends and soon enough my friend Samuels father became interested in my mother and eventually a year later they got married. At first it was weird as moving in with one of your friends should be. But eventually it became the new normal and I adapted. My only hope for this year is that my mother remembers my birthday. It is only two days away after all. This year my birthday falls on a sunday. And right now it's friday afternoon and I just got home from school. As soon as I got home I rushed up the stairs to call my father to see how far away he was.
¨Hey, Samara¨ My dad said with a slight sorrowful...
