The Wall
I pat the foundation lightly on my cheeks. I won’t use any concealer. These dark circles have become a part of my face like the nose, eyes and the lips. And besides, Gaurav doesn’t need it. “Why do you have to look so porcelain and spotless? You look like a cute panda with those circles,” he’d say whenever I brood over the perennial blackness under my eyes. I know it sounds cheesy but I guess, little bit of cheesiness is fine, especially if it helps comfort your spouse.
It’s over 8 pm already. He’ll be home any minute. There’s no rush though. I’m done wearing the saree - lilac pink chiffon with silver chikankari work. It’s his favorite and I can’t agree more. The color looks pretty on my skin. For hair, I’m more of a bun person but today I’ve done soft curls with waves. It goes well with this saree. I’ll quickly do my face and tada! God…I can’t believe it’s our 4th anniversary already. Technically, it’s 9th including the 5 years of dating. Gaurav loves giving surprises. Every anniversary, the whole day he pretends like he doesn’t remember a thing, then later in the evening, he drops his surprise. On our 1st anniversary after marriage, he’d thrown a party with close friends. The next year, it was a movie night at the theatre we’d gone for our first date in college. I’m terrible at planning, so I don’t even take the trouble. “Your job is to just get ready and wait for it,” he’d say with a satisfied smirk. Honestly, I love his surprises and can’t wait to find out what he’s planned this time.
Creakk! My amazement gets interrupted by the sound of the main door. Ah! He’s here, he’s home already. When you’ve been with someone for so long, you can tell them apart from the sound of their footsteps, the sound of them opening a door and other little things. You don’t have to be in the same room to know that it’s them. I must admit that at 31, it’s a bit embarrassing to feel butterflies for your partner like a teenager. But wait…his footsteps stopped in the living room. He didn’t even call out my name.
Oh…I get it. He’s still at it. His silly “I don’t remember anything” game. Let me play along for a while....
