Love Your Neighbour

The previous chapter closed with the scripture that tells us that our obedience is unto a fervent, unfeigned love for others out of a pure heart.

To love one another is to have Life (eternal). To hate one another is to abide in death.
1 John 3:14
[14]We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

Remember the Life is the light of men?

To love one another is to walk in light and be full of light. To hate any man is to walk in darkness.

1 John 2:10-11
[10]He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
[11]But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

The light that is in his body has been put out and made dark.

Jesus put special.emphasis on loving one another. He called it the SECOND GREATEST COMMANDMENT.

Mark 12:28,31
[31]And the second (greatest commandment) is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Jesus said that of all the commandments the second greatest is that we love one another.

In fact only our love for God should supersede our love for others. Not our love for the world.

The reason Jesus identifies this commandment as the second greatest is shown below:

Romans 13:8-10
[8]Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
[9]For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[10]Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

We see that at least five of the Ten Commandments given to Moses focus on our love for one another.

The first four of the Ten Commandments focus on our love for God.

The fifth also focuses on our love for others (our parents) and for God (who gave us to them).

We are therefore to focus on loving God, as was already discussed, and loving our brother.

We CANNOT say we love God and not love one another. It is impossible!

1 John 4:20-21
[20]If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
[21]And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

If we cannot love them that we do see and interact with on a daily basis. We cannot love God whom we cannot see.

The way we love one another is the way we love God.
Matthew 25:40

[40]"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

When we hate one another we hate God.

We cannot say we love God and in our hearts we hate another or have not forgiven another.

Now I'm sure you've noticed that throughout the scriptures we are called to love our neighbour and our brothers (and sisters) in Christ. We may say that this is all we are called to love but this is not true.

Notice that Jesus says when we love even our enemies that He shall call us the children of the most High,

We cannot say we are the children of God and hate one another.

1 John 3:10-11,18

[10]In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
[11]For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

Do you from your heart love your brother?
