Devi Shailaputri
Devi Sati was daughter of prajapathi Daksha, son of Bhramha deva. Daksha did not want his daughter to marry shiva as he considered shiva as dirty ascetic. Sati married shiva she moved to kailasa.One day daksha organized big yagna and called all gods except shiva and sati. Sati longed to go home and attend it. Shiva dissuaded her from going to yagna. He tried to reason with sati it was obvious that king did not want them there.But sati ignored her husband's advice and went the ceremony. Daksha started insulting shiva. This was too much for sati to bear. She jumped into holy yagna and immortled herself.
Shiva then carried the half burnt body of sati. Body of sati was cut into pieces with the help of sudarshana. The body parts fell into many places. These place later came to be known as shakthi peeta. There are 52 shakthi peeta.Shailputri is the first form of NavaDurga; and is also known as Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati. She is known to be the earthly essence. Maa Shailputri is the major and the absolute form of the Goddess. Since she was the wife to Lord Shiva and is known as Parvati. She took birth as the daughter of Lord Himalaya; due to which she is named as Shailputri – the daughter of mountains. Her deity has a half moon in her forehead and holds a trident in her right hand & lotus flower in her left hand. The Goddess can be seen seated on mount Nandi (bull).
