PATIENCE PAYS
#WritcoStoryPrompt3
I read it once, then twice. I wasn't imagining it - I had won the lottery!
My name is Oma well am basically an orphan and also from the Eastern part of Nigeria. i do have relatives but it's well known that you get to know those who love you in your hard times.
I graduated from AZIK college in 2014 as a biochemist with a first class result, but I had no job. Or maybe because I had no one to connect me as the world now deals on connections. Back then in my second year in college I met Jude - he was a student of chemical engineering. We became close friends as I shared all my problems with him and he did same. Jude's parents were well to do in Ibadan so he had hope of getting a good job while I had none. Jude was like a guardian angel to me. I can recall the very day I cried to Jude about a lecturer of mine who wanted to have canal knowledge of me or he would fail the course. Jude, without much hesitation, went up to the lecturers office after some hours, he came out, took me by the hand and we left school campus for a weekend out.
We lodged in a hotel and he requested for two rooms, I smiled within me. We went out for dinner not in a restaurant but in a place full of flowers and water flowing out from several holes, it was a beautiful scene. And it was there Jude poured out he's heart to me, expressing so much emotions I couldn't hold myself as tears dropped from my eyes as he made promises to me but one thing caught my heart - he promised to be there for me no matter the circumstances he was ready to fight the handle holding my hand .
3 years after geaduating from college, I still was jobless but I had things doing, I was a writer and a motivational speaker cause that's what I knew how to do best "chuckle"
Jude was the president of the union of Chemical Engineers of Nigeria. And yeah! we were still in a relationship. Jude had always wanted to get me something doing but I insisted on doing it on my own. I had always done it alone at least with him by my side I could do more. He's love was all I needed "smiles"
Challenges came when there was fear if Jude's parents were going to accept me as I was not only an orphan but also from the Eastern part of the Country whilst he was from the western part of the country. And at most times, such relationships don't end up lasting due to different believes and cultures. Jude gave me the assurance I needed as he promised to fight for our love no matter the circumstance.
I didn't want Jude's parents to meet me cause I had nothing much doing basically I wasn't well financially fit and didn't want to end up feeding from Jude's pocket. Jude finally insisted on me meeting he's parents, I had no choice but to accept whatever comes out from the meeting. The night before the day I had butterflies in my belly, my heart was beating twice as usual, the thought of sleeping had cleared from my mind and then a text came in, it was from Jude, it read "make sure you get some sleep, you need to look great for tomorrow so stop thinking about what will happen just know that I'd be with you"- it was like he knew everything about me - that made me smile and I went to bed.
The D-Day came and at exactly 8:00am in the morning, Jude was at my door. we got ready and left. Arriving at Jude's family house got me wondering how it would have been having a true family who loved and cared for you . After due questioning from Jude's parents, I didn't care if they didn't approve of us cause I was satisfied and honoured to have been loved by someone who truly loved and appreciated me.
There were wide spreads about a lottery and what the winners would get going viral on Twitter. I was sitting in the couch scrolling through my phone when Jude suggested that I tried the next one coming in and I laughed and reminded him that the next game would be in two years as it happened every two years. He wasn't perturbed at all as he told me to be patient .
Two years later, I was having my siesta when Jude woke me up and told me to dress up - I was in a very bad mood that day and inorder to avoid problems I decided to sleep . when he woke me up and told me to dress up I wasn't interested in all he had to say as all I thought about was getting the 80 million naira to open my new business and solve other demanding issues.
I dressed up and we went out and we got to a small shop . I was quite surprised - I thought we was taking me out on a date "Jude what is this place ? I asked
"oh it's a betting shop for the lottery I told you about"
I drew his ear so hard as he laughed at my outfit "I never told we were going on a date" Jude replied.
We both laughed together, we are like cats and dogs but he is also my bestfriend.
I played the game after reading the instructions thoroughly - well am a woman who follows due protocol. We left together for Choppers restaurant and we had dinner there.
After some weeks, I decided to take a loan from the bank without the knowledge of Jude. On getting into managers office, I was about to make a transaction when a message came in I looked at it with no interest but when it sinked in and I took a second look, I had won the lottery of 200 million naira.l!! I couldn't believe my eyes. I remembered all Jude had told me of how patience pays I was indeed a proud mother of Jude's kids.
