1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1Jn 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Here we are told again: we cannot love the world or Love Not the World things that are in the world and have the love of the Father in us at the same time. We will love one and hate the other. We will hold to one or despise the other.

When we set our affections on one, our affection for the other dies. We cannot have our affections on both.

The world and the things of the world appeal to the lusts of the eyes (e.g. things that promote an attraction to the eyes); the lusts of the flesh (the things that appeal to the comforts and satisfying of the flesh) and the pride of life (things that serve to satisfy our pride: make us feel better or be better than others). These things are of the world and to love these things is to hate God. To love God is to hate these things.

We cannot love both.

Why? Because the lusts of the flesh (pride included) bring forth sin and sin brings forth death.

James 1-15:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that LOVE HIM.

Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of HIS OWN LUST, and enticed.

Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth SIN: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth DEATH.

It is by these three things that Satan caused Eve to sin.

Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (appealed to the lusts of the flesh), and that it was pleasant to the eyes (appealing to the lusts of the eyes), and a tree to be desired to make one wise (appealing to the pride of life), she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

It is by these things that Satan tempted Jesus.

Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. (appealing to the lust of the flesh)

Mat 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

(In other words, do what you want, you're God's Son, your position affords you His protection: appealing to the pride of life)

Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (appealing to the lusts of the eyes).

It is by these three things that Satan tempts us.

It is our lusts and our pride that we must overcome.
