Tithing: What the Bible Says
#Tithe #tithing #God #God'sword #jesus #jesuschrist

Tithing is first done by Abraham to Melchisidek, the Most High God

Genesis 14:18-20
[18]And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
[19]And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
[20]And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he (Abraham) gave him ( Melchisidek) tithes of all.

We find that Melchisidek was God in human form, acting out the office of a priest.

Hebrews 7:1-4
[1]For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
[2]To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
[3]Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
[4]Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

Only God is without father, mother and beginning or ending of days.

We also learn from the fact that Melchisidek, being made like the Son of God and being God in the office of a priest, that the Son of God is also God manifesting Himself in another office.

We see the pattern set for giving a tenth as a tithing to God.

Tithing is not only money but other things should be acceptable.
Leviticus 27:30
[30]And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD.

Leviticus 27:32
[32]And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.

We also learn that this tithe paying is to be made through a priest. That priest is commanded to pay tithes also.

Hebrews 7:5,9-10
[5]And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
[9]And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.
[10]For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

Numbers 18:26
[26]Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

Tithing may also be done to strangers, widows and the fatherless.

Deuteronomy 26:12
[12]When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it (tithing) unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;

However tithing and offerings to the Lord are to be made in the place where God has put His name.

Deuteronomy 12:5,10-12,19
[5]But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
[10]But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;
[11]Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD:
[12]And ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you.
[19]Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth.

This place is not necessarily any church but one where the Spirit of God and the Word of God dwells.

And the true ministers of the gospel should not be forsaken.

However the scriptures also say that only widows who are faithful and do not have any one else to depend on should be assisted.

1 Timothy 5:16
[16]If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

It also says that it is the responsibility of the church to provide for those that are truly of widows and to provide for the household of faith first.

Galatians 6:10
[10]As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Even in the New Testament, We see that tithing needs to be done and involves more than money and material things.

Matthew 23:23
[23]Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Jesus says that tithing ought not to be left undone but tithing alone does not please God if your life does not meet His requirements.

So those who believe that because they pay tithes and do good works they are saved will find themselves like the Pharisee in Jesus parable who thought his works could keep him but became proud in his heart.

Luke 18:10-14
[10]Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
[11]The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
[12]I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
[13]And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
[14]I tell you, this man (Publican) went down to his house justified rather than the other (Pharisee): for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Paul also endorsed tithing...

1 Corinthians 9:7-15
[7]Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
[8]Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
[9]For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
[10]Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
[11]If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
[12]If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
[13]Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
[14]Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
[15]But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

Paul makes it clear that ministers should receive tithes and live by them but warns ministers that they should work and provide for themselves so that the gospel be not hindered and the people can receive the gospel without charge.

Tithing also is more meaningful when it hurts.
Luke 21:2-4
[2]And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
[3]And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
[4]For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury (poverty) hath cast in all the living that she had.

So those that say they do not have enough money to live by and so do not pay tithes are without excuse.

Tithing is a blessing. To not pay tithes is to rob God and to bring a curse upon oneself.

Malachi 3:8-12
[8]Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
[9]Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
[10]Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
[11]And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
[12]And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.

So based on the scriptures, it is essential to put in 1/10 of all that you receive from the Lord (not only your salary) and give it back to the Lord through the ministers of the gospel, the poor, widows and the fatherless; first to those that are truly of the household of  faith (i.e. obedient to the gospel and not just confessors of the gospel) and to them that are truly in need.
