Devi Kalaratri
once two auras named shumba & nishumba invaded devaloka & indira deva. After losing swarga, indra along with all gods went towards himalaya. they prayed to devi parvati to help them to get back devaloka. parvati created chandi & sent her to kill asuras. In the battle field, shumba & nishumba sent two demons called chanda-munda. chandi created another godess kaali, to fight chanda-munda. kaali killed both of them hence she got the name chamundi.
Another demon, Rakthabeeja, was sent to kill kaali. Raktha means blood & beeja means seed.
Rakthabeeja had a boon, which he had recieved from Bhramha, that as soon as a drop of his blood would fall on ground, a look-alike of rakthabeeja would get created. This meant that every drop of his blood that would fall on ground would act as seed from which another asur, similar to rakthabeeja would appear. when devi kalaratri saw this, she realized that is impossible to kill rakthabeeja. Devi kalaratri started drinking each drop of blood that she attacked to prevent the blood from dropping on the ground. this way she killed rakthabeeja. Devi chamundi killed shumba-nishumba & indra got devaloka back.
