Jesus and the 5th Commandment
5th commandment. 5️⃣
Against disrespect:
Deuteronomy 5:16
[16]Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Jesus refuted the tradition of Korban because it entertains disrespect and irresponsibility of children to their parents. This tradition meant that because children already pledge their resources to the temple treasury for God, they are now justified not to extend resources to help their parents:
Mark 7:11
[11]But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

He instructed people to honour our earthly parents but most importantly, to bring glory to our heavenly parent, God the Father:
Matthew 5:16
[16]Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Jesus gave us the opportunity to become children of God:
Matthew 5:45
[45]That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Honoring God, our Father means seeking His kingdom and obeying His commandments:
Matthew 12:49-50
[49]And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

[50]For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.🙏👆
Jesus honoured God the Father, in three remarkable occasions and people also heard the voice of God commending His Son:
Jesus glorified God during the baptism with John in the Jordan river:
Luke 3:22
[22]And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.🌅🕊️
Jesus glorified God during the transfiguration with Moses and Elijah:
Mark 9:7
[7]And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.☁️🌥️
Jesus glorified God during the entry at Jerusalem before the crucifixion:
John 12:28
[28]Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.🐴👑
Young Jesus was already honoring God in the temple, to the extent that His earthly parents were so worried:
Luke 2:49
[49]And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

He also honoured His earthly parents, Joseph and Mary on these occasions:
He honoured His father Joseph being from the bloodline of King David, fulfilling the prophecy:
Matthew 1:16
[16]And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

He honoured His father Joseph because of His excellent wisdom:
Luke 4:22
[22]And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

He honoured His father Joseph, by doing the work of a carpenter:
Mark 6:3
[3]Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

He honoured His mother Mary by having a virgin birth:
Luke 1:31
[31]And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

He honoured His mother Mary by turning water to wine in a wedding:
John 2:4
[4]Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

He honoured His mother Mary while suffering on the cross:

[26]When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!🙎
