The Dive into Serenity

Air. Cold air, blowing against my bare skin. Sand on my feet, little grains giving in each time I take a step towards the water. The sky is grey and calm, while the water is hurried and messy. My left foot steps into the water, and my veins are shot with more coldness. I take another step, and another. My bottom half is completely submerged in water, my stomach swirling. I feel the heat draining from my body as I keep walking. The ocean floor is soft, with the occasional sharp stone pressing into my feet. My eyes are closed as I’m up to my neck in the salty water. I take a deep breath, and everything falls.

I can see an image of myself, beneath the surface. Hair drifting like seaweed, slowly dancing to the water’s movements. My body drifts along, and a small fish darts curiously through my limbs. My lungs shiver from held-in breaths, and my heart from the freezing waters. It’s the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. Serene, and gentle. The water cradles me, almost lulling me to sleep. All too soon, the pressure becomes too much. My head pops out from the water like a child from the womb. My lungs rejoice, the fresh air expanding in them. I lick my lips, salty and soft. Closing my eyes once more, I ready myself for another round.
