Monsoon murmurs (13)
The Hindi agitation that occurred in Tamilnadu during 1960s had changed the regional politics for ever. The state congress government was defeated by a regional party called Dravida Munetra Kazhagam or DMK in short. DMK found phenomenal victory based on Tamil pride. Tamil cinema was behind the success. In most MGR movies DMK support was undeclared. People were swayed by Tamil pride on one side and the newly emerging celluloid magic on the other side. As MGR fan Nandu liked DMK. C.N.Annadurai, the founder of DMK was a great orater in Tamil and crowd puller. Nandu has waited for his talk for hours on the road. The support was feverish. All Tamil teachers in his school were supports of DMK expecting a historical crowning for Tamil, a language they teach with passion.
Tamil literature was undergoing a phase shift as well. The prolific Tamil poetry with rhythm, meter, metaphor has changed to modern poetry where meters were disregarded for the meaning. Satire and political symbolism took leading role in poetry. The cinema dialogs that were slow, puranic and brahminical in style were changed radically by DMK script writers such as Barathidasan, Annadurai and Karunanidhi into modern, revolutionary left wing dialogues. Poetry is a living tradition in Tamilnadu and poetry pulls crowd. Boys were waiting eagerly to write something to the girls that attract their attention. They believed sincerely what they wrote was poetry. Well, the girls had no idea of poetry either. They all believed that a language that rhymed was poetry. DMK knows this weakness and exploited them.
Nandu's introduction to poetry came when her sister brought the epic poems of Barathi. This national poet of Tamil language was similar to Tagore for Bangla. Barathi's poetry was simple, direct and sweet. Like Tagore sangeeth in west Bengal, Barathi's songs were sung all over Tamilnadu. Nandu's sisters sing well those songs and hence called for many meetings and seminars to sing. The highschool curriculum was secular in nature with a song from Barathi's on Sivasakthi, a song from Thembavani by Constantino Giuseppe Beschi turned Tamil Veeramamunivar, a song from Umaruppulavar on Allah and a song from Alwars on Sri Vishnu. Modern poetry never entered their curriculum yet. The teachers were well versed in classical poetry (BCE 3 to CE 3), poems of Bakthi period (CE 6-14) , poems of Kamban and Arunagiri (CE 14-18) and then modern poetry of Barathiyar period. The tall Srinivasan, a Tamil teacher of his class belongs to Raju clan, descendants of Naicks of Vijayanagara empire who ruled Tamilnadu before British.
English syllabus will include non-details such as R.K.Narain's Swami and friends, poems of Wordsworth etc. Nandu liked Swami and friends. Many of Swami's adventures were similar to his life's adventure, except the sexual fantasies. Probably, R.K.Narain was hesitant writing those adventures! Papa had a Government Jeep to drive him around. The driver's name was Mahalingam. He had two wives and he never failed to show people he is capable of more. He had a youthful son called Mahendran from his second wife. Mahendran used to tell Nandu and his friends about his sexual adventures whenever he goes to his athai (aunt)'s village for vocation. His aunt had a beautiful daughter with big boops. Mahendran could take liberty with her as a cousin. He used to take her to corn fields, tall and shady. She was not like the Brahmin girls who were dry and juiceless. She was quite interested in sex and pulled him to the fields. Mahendra was not fair like Brahmin boys but dark with mustache and muscles. Nandu would think that any girl will be fall for him. Unfortunately, Nandu's father had no sisters and her mom had no brothers. All channels were closed for him and hence very keen on hearing cousin love stories from Mahendra. Mahendra will narrate it with such details, Nandu's gang will get wet. Nandu has never kissed a girl in detail so when Mahendra kissed her girl, Nandu would imagine sleeping with her as well. Mahendra would explain how he undressed her half saree and entered his hands on her breasts. Nandu's heart would beat fast. When Mahendra entered her under garments Nandu's little penis would automatically get erect and ready for an action. He would ask him to get him more details. Mahendra would only be happy to give him what he wanted. Ultimately, Nandu's ejection will happen in privacy in the toilet.
Nandu hated Maths mainly for the teacher Naidu. He is such a torturer he would squeeze his muscles behind his arms. That was a tender portion and hence pains a lot. The English teacher L.V Sir was equally skilled in squeezing him out. English grammer was so hard for him that he would never master it. The teacher will have in his hand a book by Wren and Martin. Nandu hated these names. But he enjoyed reading Swami and friends. They had teachers for social studies, science, maths and history. Nandu was keen in Geography over history. He knew the capital of all nations of his time.
Of all, Tamil was his favourite. Srinivasan being young himself will feel shy looking at his class girls. They all attained puberty and wore half sarees. However, he won't hesitate teasing them in front of boys to win over their hearts. Srinivasan while explaining Tamil poetry would say, 'Anangu' means in Tamil a deity as well as...he will pause. Then look at girls and say ghosts (pey). This will bring lots of laughter among boys as they consider the girls more of a ghost than Devi.
Nandu had never gone anywhere except Tirupathi and so when Jayaraman arrived from Bombay it was a great joy for Nandu. Jayaraman's narration of Bombay was so fascinating that he wanted to visit Bombay. But Nandu's father could not afford to pay the train ticket to Bombay. Jayaraman introduced how to play cards. Nandu's favourite game on those days were Kittipul, the forerunner of English Cricket. Nandu was good in pambaram (the top) as well. Jayaraman introduced how to play cards in different ways. Soon Nandu mastered that art and beat every one. Jayaraman introduced ball badminton as well. Nandu has seen adults playing this game and will never allow him to play. Jayaraman formed his own team with Nandu as a striker. Nandu enjoyed this game as well. He even entered the school team and went for badminton tournaments. His most other favourite game was Kabadi. River vaigai had plenty of place to play on her sands for these boys.
