Wild goose chase

The parcel that had arrived today, contained an old key and a list of instructions to use it.
I looked down at the package on my doorstep, carefully wrapped in brown paper and curiously and enthusiastically picked it up. I went inside with it and sat down at my table.
I undid the string and unfolded the paper. Inside I found the key unusually crafted of a metal unknown in these parts of my land. The only other thing inside was a set of directions. At first glance, it seemed to be a treasure hunt, but I wasn't convinced it was to be that easy. I turned the old key in my hand and thought, why not. I could do with a bit of excitement.
After one last look at the directions I could make better sense of what was necessary. I made final preparations and was on my way. I put the key in a safe pocket and the instructions in my satchel slung across my shoulder.
I easilly followed the path described to follow. Even then it was a days walk. Nightime fell and I made a shelter to sleep. Nights were not too cold this time of the year. I made a small fire just in case of wild animals.
I got up with the sun, ready to reach my destination that same day. I double -checked I still had my special key.
I finally found the same spot as described as to where I should find my prize.
I stared into the mouth of a tiny cave. Was this it. Such a minor looking position for a seemingly important purpose. I quietly stepped in almost trying not to disturb the surroundings.
Getting my torch out I made my long way through the tunnels according to the map included.
I reached the designated cavern and what I saw was worth the whole trip. A huge box made of wood with a heavy gold lock stood in the middle of the cave.
I impatiently fiddled inside my pocket for the key to unlock the mysterious box.
The latch opened but I hesitated, unsure of what I would find.
Gently lifting the lid there was nothing to have been concerned about, except for one thing. What was inside was just another parcel with another key and set of instructions.
