Is it a darkly passionate tale of love? Or should we call it a highly original gothic story?
The classic drama FATAL SECRET by Jabulani Timothy Khanyile, is in my opinion, a unique and gripping blend of these genres. Written in 2019 to 2020, it is an epic family saga full of desires, hate, revenge and regret, focussing on the main characters of ALICE and MICHAEL.
The atmospheric setting of the wild ALICE moors cleverly mirrors these violent emotions.
When ALICE chases her son BROZOVIC away, she feels deeply hurt and resentful. She, on the other hand develops an immensely strong bond with her daughter MAMIGIRL, which becomes an all-consuming love. Despite loving MICHAEL, BRANDIGAN, MAMIGIRL'S father.
It is the decision which leads to heartbreak and tragedy, not only for them but for many others.
ALICE could be described as an anti-hero with her rough manners and lack of control. Likewise, MICHAEL displays many flaws, but the reader can still empathise with these characters.
The reader or viewer may be horrified at the way that ALICE and MICHAEL behave, and yet, at the same time, the writer ensures that the reader or viewer never hate these characters because the reasons for their actions are crystal clear.
