'More than just a teacher'......
It has been a long time since I wanted to write about it. This experience dates back to the winters of January this year. I was on a 10 days School Interaction Programme mandatory under my course. I got a chance to interact with the students from government school. Although it was a very short time but I got to learn a very important thing over there.

I always used to think that teaching is an easy task. Just go and teach and you are done. I always questioned my ability to become a good teacher(I still doubt😅).

But after being around them for 10 days, my perspective stands changed. Teaching is not just about teaching. It goes beyond academics. Believe me, if your students are from underprivileged sections of society, you need to be more than just a teacher. I am not saying that private school teachers have an easy task at hand. But if you are a government school teacher, you should know that your students are from a different background.

If you cannot become 'more than just a teacher', you stand failed.

The school that I went to, had many such 'failed teachers'.

The emotional connect, in a student-teacher equation, was missing. There were many students who were in conflict with law. Two of them got an FIR registered in their name. They were the most well behaved students. They had future plans as well. They were the sharpest minds among all of the students I interacted with. Few students carried sharp knives with them always.

Many students were beaten at their homes by their drunkard fathers. Many girls would dropout next year as they will be married off.

I tried to make them aware about where they are going wrong. They had thousands of questions related to real life, not academics. Few were being bullied in the name of caste.

The kids who had an FIR in their name, their friend was beaten by his new classmates from private school where he got admitted under RTE. Such things keep happening to their friends who have been admitted through RTE. So they retaliated and ended up like that.
The gangwars among government school boys and private school boys have become common for them.

All this should have been known by their teachers too. Even if they know, they are not interested to do anything about it.

As far as their parents are concerned, I don't regret saying I hate them!!
Why to have kids when you cannot provide for them?

So, become a teacher only if you are responsible enough. You should be the sun to light up their path. You need to be the shade when their world falls apart. You should be strong enough to never ever let that hope die within them.....you got to be 'more than just a teacher'.....
