ABANDONED (chapter 2)
My Mother became tense and didn't know what to do at that moment. She decided to keep the baby and run away from the white man, even if it takes sleeping on the streets. My Mother and I became a street sleeper, where we were exposed to all kinds and types of cars and bad atrocities on the road. My Mother became an alms beggar just to get some money to take care of the unborn baby.
After a month, we went back into the basement we left because of the harshness of the weather and the shame my mother faced on the streets with her torn clothes and her untidy hair. Some people do refer to her as a Mad Woman and wanted to take her to the psychiatrists but She told them She wasn't Mad and ran away back to the basement. I took up the job given to Me by the White Man just when I saw that the suffering was getting too much. My Mother became sick but with time She recovered. After all My suffering from the day’s work, I was only able to receive 10 u.s dollars. I had to manage the money to feed My Family and buy drugs for My Mother. My Mother had My younger sister in the basement. She came out with her body filled with blood and water and I held her in my arms with her umbilical cord . We used a broken bottle to cut off the cord and I gave her back to My Mother. My Mother looked at her and started shedding tears because She never planned to have another child with the same suffering She was going through. My Mother gave her the name Annie while she called me shedrack. My sister was a little bit lightened in complexion and had blue eyes because She took a little from the White Man's complexion and also took his eyes. Annie was wrapped in a soft cloth and placed on My Mother's arms to receive her first breast milk, I watched how My Mother fed her and how She cried most of the times when She was hungry but I never for onced loved her because She has a White blood running through her veins and would be like them one day.
My Mother kept on taking care of Annie and nursing her until she was of age. Annie would go out on the streets to play, and come back home with used bullets in her hands , giving them to My Mother to open for her as treats. When My Mother found out about this, She became more afraid that someday, her Daughter might join some bad gangs and they would mislead her down the wrong path. Annie became grounded and was stopped from stepping out alone without anyone's concern. One Monday morning, after I had gone out to work for Mr Whitefield ( the White Man), Annie was left alone with My Mother when Mr Whitefield came again as he usually does. When he came in, he saw My Mother and Annie , he asked about Annie’s identity and who she was and My Mother responded to him that Annie was the result of the pregnancy that She had for him. Mr. Whitefield looked at Annie seductively, taking a closer step to her. He faced My mother and said “I no longer want you anymore, but give Me your daughter instead because only her can satisfy me”. My Mother became very angry at Mr Whitefield and said “are you nuts? "How could he ask a girl that is still very young to satisfy his Sexual desires and not just any girl but his blood daughter. Mr Whitefield responded back to her that “ the last time She told him that She was pregnant, he told her he wasn't ready to be a Father, so saying that Annie is his daughter is not an excuse”. My Mother tried all She could to not allow Whitefield's hands get to her daughter but Whitefield decided to give her a huge sum of money in return. On getting back home from the day's work, My Mother explained everything to me about what Whitefield demanded and I became concerned that I was going to kill him by all means. My Mother begged me to be calm that all was going to be fine and Annie was going to be okay. She also made mention of the huge amount he is willing to give but I shunned her up by saying “and so?”……. Our family had now become an everyday meal for the Whites to come and Invest in, we no longer have our freedom to ourselves because we were negros(blacks).
Two weeks later, Whitefield came again to the basement with a briefcase of 250,000 u.s dollars just in exchange for Annie. When My Mum heard this, She didn't want to give Annie out to Whitefield and still Insisted on saying “No!” to whatever offer he brings. At a point, She decided to tell Whitefield to replace her daughter with her instead and let them do it just as they have always been doing it but Whitefield Insisted and kept on Insisting that he wants Annie. After being exposed to a lot of arguments, Whitefield decided to take it by force just as he had always done. Annie was still a small child of eight years old but very beautiful because of her identity, Whitefield took her by force and after so much begging and pleading from her mother, Whitefield didn't stop until he broke her hymen right in the presence of her mother. When Our Mother saw this, She fainted but Whitefield didn't even realize the fact that Our mother had fainted but he went ahead and sexually abused her also leaving Annie lying unconscious on the floor. Our Mother regained her consciousness back and looked at Annie that was already in a pool of blood because of what had happened. Annie was rushed to the hospital but had no money to treat her. Even though we were promised some money, those u.s dollars were all fake because we tried spending them on Annie but they were all rejected. Annie's condition was getting critical and worsened because She was in pain. A girl of eight years going through six different stitches. The Doctor also made it known to us that Annie's chances of giving birth in the future would be 50% ………“ah! What a life?” I exclaimed as I sat on the chair in the doctor's office. Annie was still left in the hospital but in pain while My Mother and I went out to look for money for her stitches.
Finally, the money was found and the stitches were made. Although it was a very painful and tough one , Annie could feel the pains of the needle passing through her vagina and each time it went in She would scream and call out to Our Mother for help. My Mother and I were filled with tears rolling down our eyes profusely as we watched Annie at the theater from the other side. After some hours the Doctor came out and broke the news to us that She had seven stitches not six and it was because of the seventh one that led to her bleeding. The Doctor also prescribed some drugs to be used in order for her to get well, the drugs were bought and She used them accordingly. We only thought the pains had subsided but we never knew it was only the beginning. Annie could not eat nor sleep because She was in severe pain. She couldn't even sit down on her own until she was helped by someone to sit. Everyday became a day of pain for Annie and she begged God for immediate death instead of passing through those pains.
