Take Me To Borderland (pt.1)
Akari Hayashi. That is my name. Akari meaning ‘Lights’. It’s funny to me because I am anything but a light. All I think is darkness. I’m not quite depressed though, the dark just fascinates me. Matter of fact, a lot fascinates me. Some strike me as a strange individual, but truth be told, I’m just curious and philosophical. Sure, not the normal Tokyo citizen but that has never mattered to me. Nor has me being a popular high school student, but I seem to be the talk around here now. Is it so wrong to wonder about the world and whether or not there is more after death?

“I’m telling you, what if there is a world on the border between life and death?”

My best friend, Nina facepalms, “Next you’re gonna come up with a theory that proves zombies are real.”

My face lights up, “Oh no, you don’t.” Nina shuts it down, slamming her locker at the thought

“But what if it is possible?” I question out loud to no one in particular.

“Nope, and none of us are going to find out. Especially you.” I sigh,

“Nina, you’re such a buzzkill.”

“For wanting to keep myself alive? Yeah, right. You’re the psychopath here Akari.”

The bell rings and we both grab our chemistry textbooks for the next class, “And don’t blow up the lab with your experiments again. Put your curiosity away for one class.”

Would I be considered a psychopath for wondering these things? Maybe one day they will come true. Then, everyone would have to rely on me for solutions. I chuckle at the thought. Of course, there’s no real way that these things could exist but the thought of them clicks something in my mind. It’s just how I work. I don’t see how that is such a problem.

“Late again, Miss Hayashi?”

I nod, bowing my head apologetically. These thoughts tend to make me daydream and once again I am late for class.

“Today we are going to be doing an experiment.” My eyes shimmer at those words. I love experiments.

The professor instructs us on what to do and sends us off to work. As soon as I stand up to go meet Nina at our usual spot, the teacher stops me,

“Akari, I understand that you enjoy these types of experiments very much, but I have decided that you shouldn’t do them anymore. This is for your safety and the safety of your peers.”

As soon as he finishes his sentence, my world is crushed. “N-No more?”
I mumble, tilting my head down to my shoes, focusing on my oddly tied shoelace. “Yes.”
He concludes his speech, then sends me out of the classroom to wait in the hall until the end of class.

How could he do this to me?

The tears threaten to spill but I keep blinking them back. Sure, there have been countless times that I forgot part of the instructions and almost started a fire, but we all make mistakes, right? Isn’t that what school is supposed to teach us? Encourage us to make mistakes and learn from them? Am I mad right now? Now, I feel bad.. Nina probably had to choose a new partner now. I wonder who she’s with..

Thud

What was that?

Hesitantly, I stand up and peek in the door. Maybe someone did something wrong and blew some chemicals up? I look inside, everyone is peacefully doing their work, not a single worry in either of their facial expressions. Then what was that?

My curiosity leads me to the window of an empty classroom. Deciding something must have happened outside, I look outside. Nothing. Nothing, but.. Fireworks?
So obviously some dumb kids thought that setting off fireworks would be a good idea during the school day, right? But something is strange about these fireworks. They don’t disintegrate. How is that possible?

“Excuse you?”

Startled, I spun around only to come face to face with Akir. Maybe a little too close for comfort, “AKIRA?”
“Yeah, so what? What are you doing here?”
Straight to the point. Cold and calculated. The opposite of me.

“I was kicked out of class.” I mutter,
“I thought you would be the last person to get kicked out of class.”

“They’re doing experiments.” He cocks his head to the side. “And you were kicked out, why?

“For the safety of myself and my peers” I recite what my teacher said.

He chuckles lightly, “What’s so funny?”

“That you got kicked out of an experiment because you wanted to learn. I find that weird.”

“You think what you want to think. One day I’ll be right.”

“Sure, sure.” He brushes it off, going back to his original thought, “Then why are you here?”

“I heard something. Turns out it’s just some dumb fireworks.”

“Fireworks?” He mutters, confused. “Yeah, probably some rebellious kids getting back at the staff. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”

THUD

Now, we both look at each other, then to the window. “That didn’t sound like a firework..”

“And you claim to be a firework expert?”

“No.. This is strange..”

“What is-”

Before I could react, he pulls me back. Now, I’m the confused one. He’s staring at the window with a curious, yet slightly off put expression on his face. Is he nervous?
Glancing up at the window, I see it. What is causing that expression. In front of the school, a large hole has been created in the ground. Fire spreads quickly around it and people are running out of their vehicles. Lots of screaming can be heard from pedestrians as chaos starts. Akira grabs my arm and leads us both out of the room. I am still in shock.

What the fuck was that?

I see more students come out of their classrooms, some panicking, some shocked. Soon, we hear another big THUD and everyone starts running. Akira is still dragging me with him. We continue running until we can’t anymore, and I trip, falling onto the floor as he looks back, a bigger THUD causes me to black out.
