THE LAST HOPE
THE LAST HOPE
............
EPISODE 3

"I called this meeting in respective of every staff here. As we all know, nobody breaks a rule here and goes unpunished. We are strict and we are known for disciplining our staff and making them work effectively for the growth of the organization and to satisfy customers' needs." Mr. Obinna coughed and continued.

"That's by the way. The main reason I assembled you all here is that the company money is missing," he announced and his eyes now fixated on me.

My heart skipped a bit the moment he said that. It was at this point I realized why everyone was carrying a long face. How can the company money be missing, in what way could the money be missing? There was something I didn't understand here.

"Ikemba, I think you should be in the right position to explain why the company money is missing. You are the only one who knows the in and out of every penny in this organization," he was referring to me.

"Honestly, I don't understand what you are saying. I have been doing my duty as usual and nothing else," at this moment I tried to explain.

"See, IK I don't have time for bull stories. I picked you up from the crash to make you a better person in the future. Is this how you plan to pay me back? I am giving you 24 hours to provide the missing money of 10.5 million or else you will be kicked out of this organization empty-handed."

The moment he said those words. I realize he wasn't joking. But how on earth would he blame me? Only God knows I was innocent of the accusations.

"Please I swear with all my life. I never took your money or planned to do so either. I have worked for you for years now, at least you should know that I can not do such a thing to you, boss." I tried to explain further with tears beginning to build up in my eyes.

"Yes, I trusted you enough that is why I granted you the full access. But now you have changed and you think you can outsmart the master. You want me to settle you off so you can run away with my money too. You are a real criminal!" he fired.

Other staff joined him to blast at me. I sobbed hot tears, why would life happen to me this way? Is like I saw this coming earlier because I warned my parents about this man but they wouldn't listen, they trusted him enough. Now look at the irony he had brought to my life.

"You are a betrayer, Ikem. Upon all I have done for you in this life. So this is how you plan to pay me back. You are so ungrateful. My God will punish you!" He fired and rained curses.

That day was my last day working with Mr. Ibinna as I got kicked out for what I didn't do. I regretted ever following him to the city. This was exactly 7 years and he was supposed to settle me this year. Why would be this cruel and unkind to me?

Why he would betray my parents and frustrate my life? Why? I was shedding tears as I kept walking on the road in that cold evening thinking of where to lay my head on.

I didn't know anybody in this city or have any place in mind to spend the whole night. I was hopeless at the moment. I carried my bag and kept walking, not knowing exactly where I was heading.

I didn't have any money on me. My stomach begins to bite me so hard. While walking on the road, I decided to enter one of the drinking spots that was along the roadside.

I went there and sat down, I kept my little bag beside me, it contained my clothes, Bible and reading materials. Though, the way I was dressed you will think I was a university student.

I sat there for almost an hour, I was hungry and tasty. Tears flow from my eyes freely as I bend my head down to just let it pour in torrent. I reasoned for a while. When I left my head, immediately I spotted someone.

The person just got out of the car and walked into the beer hall. The person in particular looked familiar when I looked at him closely.

I tried to study his movement. However, I couldn't see his face clearly due to the dimming light. I tried to look at his face very well but just then. He caught me looking at him and was surprised.

To be continued.
